List I
A. Radiation inversion
B. Subsidence inversion
C. Frontal inversion
List II
P. descending air warming adiabatically
Q. surface cooling on a clear calm night
R. warm air overrunning colder air at a front
Select the correct match.
Answer: C
Radiation inversions form at the surface overnight, subsidence inversions form aloft within anticyclones, and frontal inversions occur where warm air overruns cold. Each has a characteristic depth and position that allows it to be identified on a sounding, and recognising which is present tells a forecaster a great deal about the situation.
