HCL Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
HCLTech documents one campus route in full and publishes nothing about the rest. The documented one is TechBee, and it recruits not graduates but students who have just finished Class XII.
HCL calls it an exclusive job program for students who are eager to start their tech careers right after Class XII, and India's first-of-its-kind program which offers assured jobs to students right after Class XII. Candidates take 12 months of training and, on successful completion, are deployed with full time jobs at HCLTech.
It is a paid programme, not a free recruitment. The IT Services track carries a program fee of INR 1.40 lakh and Business Process Operations INR 51,000. In exchange there is a stipend during the internship, a job at the end, and a sponsored route to a degree, taken while working, with BITS Pilani, IIT Guwahati, IIIT Kottayam, IIM Sirmaur, SASTRA University or Amity University Online. HCL reports 200 or more TechBees completing a four-year graduation degree from BITS Pilani.
There is a real selection test: Registration, HCL CAT, HR Interview with essay grading, and Versant. HCL CAT is a basic career aptitude test consisting of quantitative and logical reasoning; Versant is a test to check language skills including spoken English.
The programme is run by HCL Training & Staffing Services (HCL TSS), an HCLTech subsidiary and an approved training partner of the National Skill Development Corporation, which is why HCL states its services are exempt from GST under notification 12/2017 Central Tax (Rate) of 28 June 2017. TechBee now runs in six or more countries, including Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, the Americas and Canada, across 20 or more job roles.
For graduate hiring, HCLTech publishes a job board at careers.hcltech.com and no assessment pattern at all. A candidate looking for an HCLTech graduate test pattern will not find one from HCLTech.

Exam Pattern
TechBee: four steps
| Step | What it is, in HCL's words |
|---|---|
| 1. Registration | The application itself, on HCL's TechBee registration site |
| 2. HCL CAT | A basic career aptitude test consisting of quantitative and logical reasoning |
| 3. HR Interview and Essay grading | A face-to-face interaction with the HCLTech selection committee to prove your mettle, with an essay graded alongside |
| 4. Versant | A test to check language skills including spoken English |
Two of those four are tests, and HCL describes each in a line and no more. No question count, no duration, no marks and no negative marking rule is published for either, which is why none appears here.
One way to skip the aptitude test
Applicants with 80 percentile and above in IIT/JEE Mains (2025 and 2026) will be exempted from HCL CAT. They can directly appear for Versant and interviews. The exemption is from the test only: the cut-off marks criteria for Class XII will be applicable for all, and a JEE-exempt candidate applying for IT roles still needs the minimum board cut-off along with 60 marks in Maths.
The essay is not a separate paper. HCL folds it into step 3, labelled HR Interview and Essay grading, so expect to write as well as speak at that stage.
For graduate hiring
HCLTech publishes no assessment pattern, no sections, no duration and no sample material for graduate or lateral recruitment. Its careers site is a job board at careers.hcltech.com, with roles by country and a talent community. Any HCLTech graduate test pattern giving section names and timings did not come from HCLTech.
Syllabus
HCL publishes no syllabus. It publishes what each stage tests, in a line each, and what the twelve months of training cover.
| Stage | HCL's description | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| HCL CAT | A basic career aptitude test consisting of quantitative and logical reasoning | School-level arithmetic and reasoning. The word basic is HCL's, and the candidates are Class XII leavers |
| Versant | A test to check language skills including spoken English | Spoken and general English, tested separately from the interview |
| Essay | Graded alongside the HR interview | Written English produced on the day |
No topic list, question count or duration is published for any of them.
The one subject requirement HCL does state is Mathematics or Business Mathematics at a minimum of 60 per cent, for IT roles only. That is a Class XII subject requirement rather than a test syllabus, and it is the clearest signal HCL gives about the mathematical level the IT track assumes. It does not apply to Business Process Operations.
What the programme itself teaches
- Classroom training, 6 to 9 months: the fundamentals of IT, including programming languages and relevant industry tools, processes and certifications, with communication and personal grooming lessons.
- On-the-job training, 3 to 6 months: live projects at HCLTech, after which scholars join HCLTech as IT Engineers.
- Higher education, 3 to 4 years for an undergraduate programme, taken while working full-time, through an e-learning curriculum from HCL's partner institutions.
So the honest preparation is Class XII quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning, spoken English for Versant, and written English for the essay. There is nothing narrower to aim at, because HCL has published nothing narrower.
Eligibility Criteria
TechBee's eligibility is published in full, and the marks requirement is unusual: it varies by board.
| Minimum Class XII aggregate | Boards |
|---|---|
| 75 per cent | Andhra Pradesh, NIOS, Tamil Nadu, Telangana |
| 70 per cent | CBSE, ISC, Orissa, Karnataka |
| 65 per cent | Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Punjab |
| 60 per cent | Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jharkhand |
HCL adds one line under that table, without naming a board: aggregate score of 28 with a minimum 4 in every course.
Find your own board's row. A CBSE candidate needs 70 per cent, a Bihar or Maharashtra candidate 60, an Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu candidate 75. HCL is normalising for how differently the boards mark.
| Condition | HCL's rule |
|---|---|
| Year of passing | Must have successfully passed the Class XII board exams in 2025 and 2026 |
| Residence | Must be Indian residents |
| Mathematics, IT roles only | Mathematics or Business Mathematics is mandatory with min 60% marks for IT roles only |
| Two marksheets | Where an original and an improvement marksheet exist, all subjects with the latest marks will be considered for calculating percentage, irrespective of any board recommendations |
| JEE Main exemption | 80 percentile and above in IIT/JEE Mains (2025 and 2026) exempts a candidate from HCL CAT, but the Class XII cut-off applies to all and IT applicants still need 60 marks in Maths |
The two tracks
| Track | Program fee | Starting salary | Maths requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT Services | INR 1.40 lakh | INR 2.50 lakh per annum | Yes, Mathematics or Business Mathematics with a minimum of 60 per cent |
| Business Process Operations | INR 51,000 | INR 2.20 lakh per annum | No |
The fee charged is HCL TSS's, not HCLTech's, and HCL states its services are exempt from GST under notification No. 12/2017 Central Tax (Rate) of 28 June 2017.
For graduate hiring, HCLTech publishes no eligibility criteria at all: no percentage floor, no backlog rule, no gap ceiling, no age limit. Requirements sit on individual postings at careers.hcltech.com.
Selection Process
Four steps for TechBee, published by HCL, and nothing published for graduate hiring.
| Step | What it is, in HCL's words |
|---|---|
| 1. Registration | The application itself |
One published route skips step 2: applicants with 80 percentile and above in IIT/JEE Mains (2025 and 2026) will be exempted from HCL CAT. They can directly appear for Versant and interviews. The Class XII board cut-off still applies, and IT applicants still need 60 marks in Maths.
What happens after selection
| Phase | Duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom training | 6 to 9 months | The fundamentals of IT, programming languages, industry tools, processes and certifications, with communication and personal grooming lessons |
| On-the-job training | 3 to 6 months | Live projects at HCLTech. Scholars who complete the programme join HCLTech as IT Engineers |
| Higher education | 3 to 4 years for an undergraduate programme | Taken while working as a full-time employee at HCLTech, through a work-integrated e-learning curriculum |
The first two phases together are the twelve months HCL advertises. The stipend is paid during the internship and the salary begins after it.
HCL names two entry points: IT Services, as an IT Services Executive in software, testing, design engineering, infrastructure and service desk support; and Digital Process Support, working on in-demand skills of IT Support. Elsewhere it describes entry-level roles as spanning Software Engineering, Infrastructure Management, Test Engineering, Design Engineering and Digital Process Operations at HCLTech offices across the globe.
For graduate hiring, HCLTech publishes no selection stages. The route is the job board, and nothing about what happens after an application is described publicly.
Salary
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Stipend during the internship | ₹ 10,000 per month |
| Starting salary, IT Services | ₹ 2.50 lakh per annum |
| Starting salary, Business Process Operations | ₹ 2.20 lakh per annum |
| Program fee, IT Services | INR 1.40 lakh |
| Program fee, Business Process Operations | ₹ 51,000 |
HCL adds one condition on the package: CTC should be in line with the minimum wages of the state.
Read the figures together, because that is the actual proposition. The IT Services fee of ₹ 1.40 lakh is more than half the first year's salary. What the fee buys is twelve months of training, a stipend during part of it, a job at the end, and access to a sponsored degree with BITS Pilani, IIT Guwahati, IIIT Kottayam, IIM Sirmaur, SASTRA University or Amity University Online. HCL reports 200 or more TechBees completing a four-year BITS Pilani degree. Whether that is a good trade is the candidate's decision, and HCL publishes both halves so it can be made honestly.
HCL also lists HCL Healthcare benefits, including medical insurance, family insurance and routine health check-ups, and discounts across amenities and healthcare categories.
For graduate hiring, HCLTech publishes no salary or CTC. Figures attached to HCLTech roles elsewhere did not come from HCLTech.
How to Apply
| Route | Where |
|---|---|
| TechBee | registrations.hcltechbee.com, reached from Apply now on hcltechbee.com |
| Graduate and lateral roles | careers.hcltech.com, HCLTech's job board |
Have ready before registering
- Class XII marks and the board. The qualifying percentage runs from 60 to 75 depending on the board, so check which row applies.
- Mathematics marks, for IT roles. Mathematics or Business Mathematics at a minimum of 60 per cent, mandatory for the IT track and not required for Business Process Operations.
- Both Class XII marksheets, if there are two. Where an original and an improvement marksheet exist, all subjects with the latest marks will be considered.
- A JEE Main scorecard, if you have one. 80 percentile and above in 2025 or 2026 exempts you from HCL CAT.
- The track decision. IT Services at INR 1.40 lakh or Business Process Operations at ₹ 51,000. HCL asks for the choice at application.
The program fee is charged by HCL Training & Staffing Services, an HCLTech subsidiary and approved NSDC training partner, which HCL states makes its services exempt from GST under notification No. 12/2017 Central Tax (Rate) of 28 June 2017. This is a paid training programme with a job at the end, not a free recruitment, which is the fact most likely to surprise someone who found TechBee described as a job program.
Around the application HCL runs career guidance sessions, school visits for principals, and government partnerships under which state governments route students in. Graduate hiring has no application fee, no common form and no published process.
Participating Institutes
The employer is HCLTech, formerly HCL Technologies, hiring into its own workforce. TechBee scholars join HCLTech as IT Engineers and work, in HCL's words, for several Fortune 500 clients.
The programme itself is run by HCL Training & Staffing Services (HCL TSS), an HCLTech subsidiary and an approved training partner of the National Skill Development Corporation. The fee is charged by HCL TSS and is GST-exempt on that basis.
The universities, which are much of the point
TechBee scholars read for a degree while working. HCL names its partners as BITS Pilani, IIT Guwahati, IIIT Kottayam, IIM Sirmaur, SASTRA University and Amity University Online, and reports 200 or more TechBees completing a four-year graduation degree from BITS Pilani, the most concrete outcome figure it publishes. The higher education page carries the current course list.
HCL also maintains a government partnerships page, under which state governments route students into the programme. Check whether a state scheme applies to you.
The programme runs in six or more countries, naming Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, the Americas and Canada alongside India, across 20 or more job roles. For graduate hiring, HCLTech's job board lists roles by country across the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe.
Exam Centres
HCL publishes no centre or city list for TechBee. It does say the HR interview is face-to-face with the HCLTech selection committee, so expect at least one stage in person; its FAQ heading Online Test points to HCL CAT being online. Logistics come with the invitation after registering at hcltechbee.com.
Important Dates
HCL publishes no dated calendar for TechBee. It recruits continuously rather than in a single annual sitting, through school visits, career guidance sessions, government partnerships and direct application, and runs the stages as applications come in. What it publishes is a batch window and a set of durations.
| What has a date or a duration | Value |
|---|---|
| Eligible Class XII batches | Passed the board exams in 2025 and 2026 |
| Eligible JEE Main years, for the HCL CAT exemption | 2025 and 2026 |
| Programme duration | 12 months of training |
| Classroom training | 6 to 9 months |
| On-the-job training | 3 to 6 months |
| Higher education, undergraduate | 3 to 4 years, taken while employed |
| Registration, HCL CAT, interview and Versant | No published dates. The schedule comes with the application |
The batch window governs. A candidate outside those years is not eligible whatever else is true, and the window moves each cycle, so check HCL's own job program page first. Graduate roles on the job board open and close individually, with no calendar at all.
Admit Card
HCL publishes no admit card for TechBee. Each stage is reached by invitation after clearing the one before: HCL CAT once the application is complete, then the face-to-face interview, then Versant. JEE-exempt candidates go straight to Versant and interviews. Schedules travel through the registration account at registrations.hcltechbee.com, so keep its contact details working.
Result
HCL publishes no marks, no qualifying score and no scorecard for any TechBee stage. Each of the four stages is simply reached by clearing the one before, and a candidate learns the outcome through their registration account at hcltechbee.com.
What HCL does publish is the outcome of the programme, which is unusually specific: on successful completion scholars are deployed with full time jobs at HCLTech and join HCLTech as IT Engineers, at ₹ 2.50 lakh per annum for IT Services or ₹ 2.20 lakh for Business Process Operations, in roles across Software Engineering, Infrastructure Management, Test Engineering, Design Engineering and Digital Process Operations. HCL also reports 200 or more TechBees completing a four-year graduation degree from BITS Pilani.
HCL calls this job assurance with HCLTech, with a condition attached to every phrasing of it: on successful completion of the twelve months.
For graduate hiring no result process is published; the outcome comes through the application on the job board.
Cut Off
HCL publishes no test cut-off for TechBee. What it publishes is a board-wise Class XII cut-off, which is the filter deciding who reaches the test at all.
| Minimum Class XII aggregate | Boards |
|---|---|
| 75 per cent | Andhra Pradesh, NIOS, Tamil Nadu, Telangana |
| 70 per cent | CBSE, ISC, Orissa, Karnataka |
| 65 per cent | Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Punjab |
| 60 per cent | Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jharkhand |
HCL adds one line under it, without naming a board: aggregate score of 28 with a minimum 4 in every course. Two further floors sit alongside: Mathematics or Business Mathematics at a minimum of 60 per cent for IT roles only, and, for anyone claiming the exemption, 80 percentile and above in IIT/JEE Mains (2025 and 2026), which exempts from HCL CAT alone while the Class XII criteria apply to all.
Most recruiters publish one percentage. HCL publishes four, from 60 to 75, grouped by board, an explicit acknowledgement that the boards mark differently. Find your own row, because the gap between the easiest and hardest is fifteen percentage points.
Nothing else is published: no qualifying score for HCL CAT, no Versant band, no interview rating, no applicant-to-place ratio, and no cut-off of any kind for graduate recruitment. HCL CAT cut-offs and section-wise HCLTech thresholds circulating elsewhere do not come from HCL and are not dated against a cycle.
Preparation Tips
Find your board's row before anything else
The Class XII cut-off runs from 60 to 75 per cent depending on the board, and it decides whether you reach the test at all. CBSE needs 70, Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh 60, Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu 75.
Check the Mathematics rule against the track you want
Mathematics or Business Mathematics at a minimum of 60 per cent is mandatory for IT roles only. Without it you are not out of TechBee, you are out of the IT Services track, and Business Process Operations stays open at a third of the fee.
Use the JEE Main exemption if you have it
80 percentile and above in JEE Main 2025 or 2026 removes an entire stage. Have the scorecard ready at application, and note that the board cut-off and the Maths requirement still apply.
Prepare for a basic aptitude test, not an engineering entrance
HCL's own description of HCL CAT is a basic career aptitude test consisting of quantitative and logical reasoning, and the candidates are Class XII leavers. School arithmetic and standard reasoning practice is the right level; JEE preparation is far beyond it.
Take the spoken English stage seriously
Versant is a separate stage after the interview, and it is the one most candidates do not prepare for. Practise speaking clearly and continuously, and test a microphone in advance. Practise the essay too: step 3 grades written English produced on the day.
Decide the track on the arithmetic
IT Services costs INR 1.40 lakh and starts at ₹ 2.50 lakh a year. Business Process Operations costs ₹ 51,000 and starts at ₹ 2.20 lakh. The fee difference is nearly ₹ 90,000 and the salary difference ₹ 30,000 a year. Work it out for your own case.
Weigh the degree, because it is much of the value
A TechBee scholar reads for a work-integrated degree with BITS Pilani, IIT Guwahati, IIIT Kottayam, IIM Sirmaur, SASTRA University or Amity University Online while employed. Compare that against three or four years of full-time study with no income, which is the real alternative. And discuss the fee at home first: TechBee is a job program, but the candidate pays for it.
Bring the right marksheet
If there are two Class XII marksheets, original and improvement, all subjects with the latest marks will be used for the percentage. Know which number HCL will take before you apply, and use HCL's own career guidance sessions rather than a third-party guide.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous year papers are available for TechBee as of now. HCL publishes none for HCL CAT or Versant. What each stage tests is on the job program page and in the FAQs. Papers circulating online do not come from HCL.
