GATE CE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

156 topics across 8 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

GATE CE is the Civil Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. IISc Bangalore and the seven older IITs run GATE in turn for the National Coordination Board under the Ministry of Education, and IIT Madras is organising GATE 2027.

The exam itself doesn't admit or hire anyone. You get a score, valid for three years, which IITs, NITs and other institutes use for M.Tech and PhD admission, and which several public sector companies use to shortlist engineers.

CE is one of the biggest papers: 97,486 people registered for it in 2026 and 76,385 sat it. Because of those numbers it was held in two sessions (CE1 and CE2) in both 2025 and 2026, with marks normalised across the two. The 2027 session plan hasn't been published yet.

Registration for GATE 2027 has closed. The exam is in February 2027 and results come out on 19 March 2027.

Questions65 (10 General Aptitude, 55 subject)
MarksGeneral Aptitude 15, Engineering Mathematics 13, Civil Engineering subject 72; total 100
Question typesMCQ, MSQ, NAT; each worth 1 or 2 marks
Wrong MCQ−1/3 (1-mark), −2/3 (2-mark)
Wrong MSQ or NATno deduction

Thirteen of the 72 subject marks come from Civil Engineering's own maths section, so a candidate effectively has 28 marks (aptitude plus maths) before structures or geotech even start.

An MCQ has one right option out of four. An MSQ can have one or more right options and you score only if you pick exactly the right set; there is no part credit. NAT answers are typed on an on-screen keypad. You use the on-screen calculator; your own isn't allowed.

Sitting a second paper

With CE as your first choice you can add AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM or XE. No other pairing was open in the registration windows.

8. Construction Materials and Management

Steel, cement hydration and admixtures, concrete mix design; estimation and costing, PERT and CPM, project monitoring, construction equipment and contract types.

General Aptitude (15 marks, same for every paper)

Verbal (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, narrative sequencing), quantitative (data interpretation, ratios, percentages, logarithms, permutations, series, mensuration, basic statistics and probability), analytical (deduction, induction, analogy, numerical reasoning) and spatial (transforming shapes, paper folding and cutting, 2D and 3D patterns).

Eligibility Criteria

You can sit GATE CE if you are in the third year or later of a bachelor's degree, or have finished a government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. A B.E. or B.Tech student qualifies from the third year; an M.Sc or MCA student from the first year. AMIE and AMICE candidates qualify once they have completed Section A or its equivalent.

There's no age limit and no cap on attempts. Your degree subject doesn't have to be civil engineering, though an M.Tech admission or PSU job will have its own branch rules.

How to Apply
CategoryOne paper, regularTwo papers, regularOne paper, late feeTwo papers, late fee
Female, SC, ST, PwD₹1,000₹2,000₹1,500₹2,500
Everyone else, including foreign nationals₹2,000₹4,000₹2,500₹4,500

Women pay the lower fee in every category. Applications went in only through GOAPS, the GATE online application system. IIT Madras asked Indian applicants to use a verified DigiLocker account, and a live photo was taken during sign-up. Until 21 October 2026 you can log in and change your category, paper or exam cities; most changes cost ₹500 per paper.

Participating Institutes

Admission. A valid score is used for M.Tech, M.E. and direct PhD admission at IITs, IISc, NITs and other centrally funded and state institutes. IITs and IISc admit through COAP and NITs through CCMT, each with its own registration. GATE-qualified M.Tech students at government-supported institutes get ₹12,400 a month, generally for 22 months.

Jobs. The GATE site lists PSUs that have used the score, among them NHAI, AAI, NTPC, POWERGRID, Chenab Valley Power Projects, Coal India and SAIL. Each company's own advertisement says whether it takes CE scores that year.

Exam Centres

GATE 2027 runs in more than 300 cities. You pick three cities, all from the same GATE zone, and IIT Madras may still allot a different city if it has to. Your city is announced on 4 January 2027.

Important Dates

GATE 2027, organised by IIT Madras. All dates can still change.

Admit Card

The admit card will be on GOAPS; IIT Madras hasn't fixed the date. It shows your centre, day and session. Carry the original photo ID you gave in the application. You can take your seat 40 minutes early, and login closes 15 minutes after the start.

Result

Results are due on 19 March 2027 on GOAPS. Before that, IIT Madras puts up your responses and a provisional answer key, and you can challenge the key for a fee.

Since CE has run in two sessions, your raw marks are normalised before the GATE Score (out of 1000) is worked out. The score is valid for three years. Scorecards are free to download for a period IIT Madras will announce, then cost ₹500 until 31 December 2027, after which none are issued.

The General qualifying mark is the mean plus one standard deviation of all marks in the paper, but never below 25 or above 40. OBC-NCL and EWS get 90% of it, SC, ST and PwD two thirds. Clearing it only makes you GATE-qualified; IITs, NITs and PSUs set their own, much higher, cut-offs.

Preparation Tips
  1. Structures and geotech together are a big share of the paper. Get indeterminate analysis and foundation design solid before anything else.
  2. Don't leave transportation and environmental for last. They are shorter to learn and full of formula questions.
  3. Learn the IRC and IS code provisions the syllabus names, such as pavement design and limit state concrete.
  4. Answer every MSQ and NAT; only MCQs cost marks when wrong.
  5. Practise long calculations on the GATE virtual calculator, since that's all you get.
  6. Solve the CE1 and CE2 papers from 2025 and 2026 on the GATE download page under timed conditions.
