BSF Constable Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
There is no BSF Constable examination. A General Duty Constable does not join the Border Security Force through a BSF advertisement. They join through the Staff Selection Commission's Constable (GD) examination, a single all India recruitment held under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Commission, which fills the General Duty Constable ranks of eight organisations at once. Apply at ssc.gov.in, not on the BSF site.
| Code | Force or organisation | Post |
|---|---|---|
| A | Border Security Force (BSF) | Constable (General Duty) |
| B | Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) | Constable (General Duty) |
| C | Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) | Constable (General Duty) |
| D | Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) | Constable (General Duty) |
| E | Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) | Constable (General Duty) |
| F | Assam Rifles (AR) | Rifleman (General Duty) |
| G | Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) | Sepoy |
| H | Secretariat Security Force (SSF) | Constable (General Duty) |
One application, one paper, one merit list. Every candidate ranks all eight forces in order of preference, and the force a successful candidate lands in is decided by merit against that list, against the vacancies of their own state, and against their category. Naming BSF first does not secure BSF.
How much of the recruitment is BSF
The Commission's tentative vacancy statement of 8 December 2025 notifies 25,487 vacancies across all eight organisations:
| Force | Male | Female | Total | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSF | 524 | 92 | 616 | 2.4% |
| CISF | 13,135 | 1,460 | 14,595 | 57.3% |
| CRPF | 5,366 | 124 | 5,490 | 21.5% |
| SSB | 1,764 | 0 | 1,764 | 6.9% |
| Assam Rifles | 1,556 | 150 | 1,706 | 6.7% |
| ITBP | 1,099 | 194 | 1,293 | 5.1% |
| SSF | 23 | 0 | 23 | 0.1% |
| Total | 23,467 | 2,020 | 25,487 |
BSF's share swings hard. The previous cycle's state wise annexure carried 14,724 male BSF vacancies; this one carries 524. Read the current cycle's table, not last year's.
BSF was raised on 1 December 1965, after Pakistan's attack on Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet in the Rann of Kutch showed State Armed Police battalions could not hold the international border. It is now the largest border guarding force in the world, deployed on the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders and on internal security duty well away from either, and it held the heights alongside the Army during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
The 2025 cycle shows the scale: 25,21,839 sat the paper, 3,94,121 reached the physical tests (3,53,908 male and 40,213 female), 95,575 cleared them, and 50,047 were recommended against 53,690 vacancies considered. The paper cuts the field by six; the race cuts what is left by four.

BSF Constable Details
Exam Pattern
One paper, 80 questions, 160 marks, 60 minutes, computer based. It is the only stage that produces a mark, so the whole merit list comes from this hour.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 20 | 40 |
| B | General Knowledge and General Awareness | 20 | 40 |
| C | Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
| D | English or Hindi | 20 | 40 |
| Total | 80 | 160 | |
- +2 for a correct answer, −0.25 for a wrong one.
- 45 seconds a question. That is the tightest constraint in the paper.
- Matriculation level, says the notice. No calculators.
- Set in English, Hindi and thirteen regional languages. Part D is taken in English or Hindi.
A blind guess among four options is worth +0.3125 marks on average, so leaving blanks costs more than guessing does.
Normalisation and NCC bonus
The paper runs over several weeks in many shifts, so raw marks are normalised using the formula in Notice No. 1-1/2018-P&P-I of 7 February 2019. That is why published cut offs carry five decimals: they are normalised scores, and you cannot reconstruct them by counting correct answers.
| Certificate | Bonus | On 160 marks |
|---|---|---|
| NCC 'C' | 5% | 8 marks |
| NCC 'B' | 3% | 4.8 marks |
| NCC 'A' | 2% | 3.2 marks |
Two conditions catch people out. The bonus is given only if the NCC box was ticked in the online form, and it is withdrawn if the original certificate is not produced at document verification. Ex-Servicemen do not get it at all.
Tentative answer keys go up after the paper, with a window to object at ₹100 per question. There is no re-evaluation and no re-checking.
Ties break on Part A marks, then Part B, then date of birth with the older candidate higher, then alphabetical order. Mathematics and the language paper never enter a tie break.
Syllabus
The Commission publishes a short indicative syllabus, four paragraphs, one per part. It is short because the paper is at Matriculation level.
Part A: General Intelligence and Reasoning
Analytical aptitude and pattern recognition, principally through non-verbal questions: spatial visualisation, spatial orientation, visual memory, discrimination and observation, figural classification, non-verbal series. The verbal and numerical side covers analogies, similarities and differences, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, arithmetic number series, and coding and decoding.
Part B: General Knowledge and General Awareness
General awareness of the environment and current events, and of everyday observation in its scientific aspect, as expected of any educated person. The notice adds that the questions do not require a special study of any discipline. Named areas, for India and its neighbours: sports, history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity and the Indian Constitution, and scientific research.
Part C: Elementary Mathematics
A closed list: number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, the relationship between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time, time and work. No algebra, no trigonometry, no geometry proof and no data interpretation. Class 8 to class 10 arithmetic, drillable to reflex.
Part D: English or Hindi
One sentence in the notice: the ability to understand basic English or Hindi, and basic comprehension. Choose the language you read faster, because the binding constraint is 45 seconds a question.
Eligibility Criteria
Indian citizenship, Matriculation, an age band of five years, and physical standards that do more of the filtering than any of the others.
Nationality and domicile
Vacancies in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles are state, union territory and area wise, so a domicile certificate or Permanent Resident Certificate is required. The Commission prints two warnings in bold because they cancel candidatures every cycle: the domicile state and district are taken from the specific domicile column of the online form, not the address boxes; and no change is allowed after submission. A certificate produced at the medical that differs from the form cancels the candidature on the spot.
Age
18 to 23 years on 1 January of the examination year. For 2025 that meant born between 2 January 2002 and 1 January 2007.
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years, after deducting military service from actual age |
| Children and dependants of 1984 riot or 2002 Gujarat riot victims, UR or EWS | 5 years |
| The same, OBC | 8 years |
| The same, SC or ST | 10 years |
Date of birth comes from the Matriculation certificate and nowhere else.
Educational qualification
Matriculation or class 10, passed on or before the crucial date. No higher qualification helps. The result must have been declared by that date; mere processing of the result does not count. Open and Distance Learning qualifications are recognised only if the university was approved by the UGC's Distance Education Bureau for the relevant period, and the approval must be produced at document verification.
Height
| Category | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| General standard | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| All Scheduled Tribe candidates | 162.5 | 150.0 |
| ST candidates of the North Eastern states | 157.0 | 147.5 |
| ST candidates of Left-Wing Extremism affected districts | 160.0 | 147.5 |
| Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Dogras, Marathas, and candidates of Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh | 165.0 | 155.0 |
| Candidates of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura | 162.5 | 152.5 |
| Gorkha Territorial Administration: Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong sub-divisions and eighteen named mouzas | 157.0 | 152.5 |
Chest and weight
| Category (male) | Unexpanded | Minimum expansion |
|---|---|---|
| General standard | 80 cm | 5 cm |
| Scheduled Tribes | 76 | 5 |
| Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Dogras, Marathas, and candidates of Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh | 78 | 5 |
| Candidates of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the Gorkha Territorial Administration | 77 | 5 |
Chest is not measured for female candidates. Weight must be proportionate to height and age. Relaxation on height or chest is scrutinised after the race is cleared, and for every category except Scheduled Tribes it needs a certificate in the Commission's own proforma, carried to the test. A failure on height or chest can be appealed the same day through the Presiding Officer to the Appellate Authority at the centre. The race cannot be appealed.
The physical efficiency test
| Candidates | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| All except Ladakh region | 5 km in 24 minutes | 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds |
| Ladakh region | 1.6 km in 7 minutes | 800 m in 5 minutes |
Five kilometres in twenty-four minutes is 4 minutes 48 seconds a kilometre, sustained. It is the hardest gate in this recruitment and three quarters of those who reached the ground last cycle did not get past it. Ex-Servicemen are exempt from the race but still attend the standards test and the medical.
Female candidates give a self declaration of pregnancy status on reporting. A candidate found pregnant is declared temporarily unfit, her vacancy is kept reserved, and she is re-examined six weeks after confinement; if fit, she is appointed with the benefit of seniority.
The medical is run by CAPF Medical Boards under the Ministry of Home Affairs' uniform guidelines. The Commission entertains no appeal, RTI or CPGRAMS grievance against a board's decision.
Selection Process
One paper decides everything; four gates then decide whether the paper counts.
1. Qualifying marks
| Category | Minimum | Out of 160 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 30% | 48 marks |
| OBC and EWS | 25% | 40 marks |
| SC, ST and Ex-Servicemen | 20% | 32 marks |
Applied before NCC bonus. It is a floor, not a cut off; nobody is called to the ground on 48 marks.
2. Shortlisting at eight times the vacancies
Candidates are shortlisted state-wise, area-wise and category-wise, separately for male and female, at about eight times the vacancies. You do not compete against the whole country. You compete against candidates of your own state, in your own category, within your own area classification. More may be called against the all India vacancies of SSF and NCB.
3. The physical tests, run by CRPF
The Physical Standard and Efficiency Tests are conducted by the CAPFs under the Central Reserve Police Force as Nodal Force. The admit card for them comes from rect.crpf.gov.in, not from the Commission, about two weeks before the test. If you cannot download it, call the CRPF Recruitment Cell on 011-26160255 at least a week in advance. Biometric verification first, then the race, then height, chest and weight.
4. Medical and document verification, at twice the vacancies
Those who clear the ground are shortlisted again on the same written merit, again state, area and category wise, at about twice the vacancies. Documents checked include the Matriculation certificate, the domicile certificate, any NCC certificate claimed, the caste certificate in the Commission's proforma, and any relaxation certificate.
5. Force allocation
All eight preferences must be filled. Allocation is on merit in the written paper cum preference, subject to the vacancies in your own state, category and area. The notice says in capitals that no request to change preferences is entertained after submission. For someone who wants BSF: put it first, then accept that BSF is 2.4 per cent of this cycle's vacancies, and that a mark good enough for a place may not be good enough for a BSF place from your state. The Commission also reserves the right to allot a force by suitability and availability regardless of preference.
Areas within a state
Vacancies are further earmarked for Border Guarding districts and for Militancy or Naxal affected districts. A candidate from a Naxal or militancy area is considered against those vacancies first, then general; a border area candidate against border vacancies first, then general; a candidate of both against Naxal first, then border, then general. SSF and NCB are filled on an all India basis and skip this machinery.
Reservation arithmetic
- A reserved category candidate selected on their own merit without any relaxed standard goes against unreserved vacancies. Last cycle this moved 2,090 EWS, 1,913 SC, 998 ST and 8,902 OBC male candidates into the UR list.
- Anyone who used a relaxed standard, whether age, height, chest or an extended zone, counts against reserved vacancies only. Age deduction for military service is not a relaxed standard.
- 10 per cent of vacancies are reserved for Ex-Servicemen, not shown separately in the vacancy tables.
After the result
No reserve list and no waiting list. Unfilled vacancies are carried forward by the forces to the next cycle. A selected candidate who hears nothing from the allotted force within six months must take it up with the force directly.
Debarment runs two to seven years. A mobile phone in the hall, switched on or off, is three years, as is appearing twice in the same examination. A forged admit card or a weapon is five years; assaulting examination staff is seven.
Salary
| Post | Pay Level | Pay band |
|---|---|---|
| Constable (General Duty), BSF | Level 3 | ₹21,700 to ₹69,100 |
| Constable (GD) in CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP and SSF | Level 3 | ₹21,700 to ₹69,100 |
| Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles | Level 3 | ₹21,700 to ₹69,100 |
| Sepoy, Narcotics Control Bureau | Level 1 | ₹18,000 to ₹56,900 |
Seven of the eight options pay identically, so pay is no reason to rank BSF above CISF or below CRPF. The eighth, NCB, pays a level lower, starting ₹3,700 a month below the rest. That is the one pay consequence of the preference order.
Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are paid over the basic at the rates in force, and a border posting adds the allowances that attach to the posting rather than the rank.
Two conditions matter on day one. A recommended candidate is liable to serve anywhere in India: selection against one state's vacancies is not a posting to that state. And appointment depends on training seats being free, so selected candidates are appointed in phases. Joining, seniority and training are then governed by the allotting force's rules.
Above Constable the ladder runs Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Inspector. Each of those also has its own direct recruitment route, so a Constable who later qualifies for one need not wait on departmental promotion alone.
How to Apply
Online only, at ssc.gov.in. There is no offline route and no application to BSF.
| Event | Date, last completed cycle |
|---|---|
| Online form open | 05 September to 14 October 2024 |
| Last time for receipt of the form | 14 October 2024, 23:00 |
| Last time for online fee payment | 15 October 2024, 23:00 |
| Correction window | 05 to 07 November 2024, to 23:00 |
The form closes a day before the fee does. A form submitted without the fee is summarily rejected, and no representation against that is entertained.
| Who | Fee |
|---|---|
| General and OBC male candidates | ₹100 |
| All women candidates | Nil |
| SC and ST candidates | Nil |
| Ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation | Nil |
Payment by BHIM UPI, net banking or debit card only. The fee is never refunded.
The correction window
Three days after the form closes, and it is not free: ₹200 for the first re-submission and ₹500 for the second, payable by everyone regardless of gender or category. There is no third correction. If the charge does not reach the Commission the corrected form is not accepted and the previously submitted form stands.
Three entries that cannot be fixed later
- Force preferences. All eight, in order. No change after submission, under any circumstances.
- Domicile state and district, entered in the domicile column and not read from the address boxes. A mismatch with the certificate produced at the medical cancels the candidature.
- The NCC claim. Untick it and the bonus cannot be claimed later, however genuine the certificate.
Candidature stays provisional right up to document verification. Applications with blurred photographs or signatures are rejected.
Participating Institutes
Three bodies run this recruitment between them.
| Body | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ministry of Home Affairs | Frames the scheme and supplies the vacancies. Its guidelines govern the medical board |
| Staff Selection Commission | Publishes the notice, takes applications, conducts the written paper, normalises and declares results, and makes the force allocation |
| CRPF, as Nodal Force | Runs the physical tests, the medical and document verification for all the forces, and issues the admit cards for those stages |
So a BSF aspirant applies to the Commission, is tested physically by CRPF, and only then joins BSF. The Border Security Force has no role until allotment.
The written paper is administered by the Commission's regional office covering your chosen centre, and that office's site carries the admit card and centre information. Representations go to it within two months of a result.
BSF itself
Headquarters in New Delhi under a Director General, with directorates for Personnel, Training, Provisioning, Medical, Law, Operations, Administration, Communications and IT, Engineering and the Air Wing. Western Command holds the Kashmir, Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat Frontiers; Eastern Command holds South Bengal, North Bengal, Guwahati, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Cachar, and Tripura. There are also Chhattisgarh and Odisha Frontiers, raised for internal security rather than border guarding, which is the clearest signal of what the job can be.
Recruits train at the Force's Subsidiary Training Centres, and which one you report to depends on where training space is free. That is why appointments come in phases.
Exam Centres
You give three centre options, in order, all within one Commission region. The Commission tries to accommodate them but reserves the right to allot another centre, and no request for a change is considered later.
| Region | States and union territories |
|---|---|
| Central, Prayagraj | Bihar, Uttar Pradesh |
| Eastern, Kolkata | Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, West Bengal |
| Karnataka Kerala, Bengaluru | Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep |
| Madhya Pradesh, Raipur | Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh |
| North Eastern, Guwahati | Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura |
| Northern, New Delhi | Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand |
| North Western, Chandigarh | Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab |
| Southern, Chennai | Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana |
| Western, Mumbai | Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra |
The centre list for each region is in the notice. Haryana has no centre of its own and its candidates sit in Chandigarh, Mohali or Punjab.
The centre and the domicile state are separate. A Bihar candidate who sits the paper in Delhi still competes for Bihar's vacancies at Bihar's cut off. The centre is a travel choice; the domicile column decides the competition, and cannot be changed.
The physical tests and the medical are held wherever the CAPFs decide, under CRPF. You do not choose, and no centre is changed on request at any stage. Assume several hundred kilometres of travel for the race.
Important Dates

| Event | Date | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Notice published | 05 September 2024 | 39,481 vacancies, of which 15,654 BSF |
| Applications close | 14 October 2024 | |
| Correction window | 05 to 07 November 2024 | |
| Computer based examination | 04 to 25 February 2025 | 25,21,839 appeared |
| Tentative answer key | 04 March 2025 | |
| Written result | 17 June 2025 | 3,94,121 to the physical tests |
| Physical Standard and Efficiency Tests | 20 August to 15 September 2025 | |

| Medical and document verification | From November 2025 | |
| Final result | 15 January 2026 | 50,047 recommended |
Sixteen months from notice to final result. Plan on the better part of two years, and keep the registered mobile number and e-mail alive throughout. The notice appears in the second half of a calendar year, applications close about six weeks later, the paper falls in the first half of the next year, the ground follows in the monsoon, and the final result lands the January after. Watch the Examination Calendar.
Admit Card
Two organisations issue admit cards for this recruitment, and a candidate who does not know that will miss a stage.
| Stage | When | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Examination city | Weeks in advance. In the current cycle, 19 April 2026 for a 27 May paper | ssc.gov.in candidate login |
| Timetable and centre information | About two weeks before | The Commission's regional office site |
| Admission Certificate for the paper | 3 to 7 days before | The same regional office site |
| Admit card for the physical tests | About two weeks before | rect.crpf.gov.in |
| Admit card for the medical and document verification | About two weeks before | rect.crpf.gov.in |
If your details are not on the Commission's site a week before the paper, contact the regional office at once with proof of having applied; failing to do so forfeits any claim to consideration. Admission Certificates are issued online only and never posted. For the CRPF cards, call the CRPF Recruitment Cell on 011-26160255 at least a week before.
What to carry
A printout of the Admission Certificate, two passport size colour photographs, and an original photo identity proof bearing the date of birth: Aadhaar, Voter ID, driving licence, PAN, passport, a school, college or employer identity card, or an Ex-Serviceman discharge book. If the ID does not print a date of birth, carry an additional original that does, such as the Matriculation certificate or a board marksheet. If that date does not match the Admission Certificate you are not allowed to sit the paper.
Biometrics taken at the written paper are the reference for every later stage. No phones, no calculators: a phone in the hall, on or off, is a three year debarment.
Result
Four results are declared over the cycle, months apart, all on ssc.gov.in: the tentative answer key, the written result with the shortlist for the ground, the physical test result, and the final result with the force allocation and the cut off annexures.
The Commission publishes a great deal. Last cycle's final result ran to 87 pages and gave, for every combination of state, force, area and category, the vacancies, the number filled, the cut off to five decimals, and the Part A marks, Part B marks and date of birth of the last selected candidate. It also uploads the detailed marks of every candidate, selected or not.
| Female | Male | |
|---|---|---|
| Vacancies | 5,370 plus 522 ESM | 48,320 plus 4,840 ESM |
| Recommended | 4,932 | 45,115 |
| Against ESM vacancies | None recorded | 287 |
| Selected at UR standard from a reserved category | 188 EWS, 214 SC, 157 ST, 967 OBC | 2,090 EWS, 1,913 SC, 998 ST, 8,902 OBC |
4,840 male Ex-Servicemen vacancies drew 287 recommended candidates. Unfilled ESM vacancies go to non-ESM candidates of the same categories, so nothing is lost, but an Ex-Serviceman competes in by far the emptiest pool here.
Results stay provisional for a long time: last cycle 2,003 were withheld on court orders or suspected malpractice, 345 went unprocessed because of debarment, and vacancies were kept reserved for 84 candidates under court orders. There is no reserve list and no waiting list, no re-evaluation and no re-checking. The only challenge route is the paid objection window against the answer key.
Cut Off
The qualifying mark and the cut off are different numbers, and the gap is enormous. Qualifying is 30 per cent for UR, 25 for OBC and EWS, 20 for SC, ST and ESM, out of 160, applied before NCC bonus. Clearing it makes you eligible for consideration and nothing more.
BSF, male, unreserved, general area, last cycle
From Annexure IV of the final result: the normalised mark of the last candidate selected for BSF against that state's general area unreserved vacancies.
| State or UT | Vacancies | Filled | Cut off, out of 160 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajasthan | 151 | 151 | 137.35 |
| Haryana | 61 | 61 | 132.61 |
| Uttar Pradesh | 450 | 450 | 132.11 |
| Madhya Pradesh | 159 | 159 | 129.44 |
| Bihar | 263 | 263 | 128.20 |
| Uttarakhand | 31 | 31 | 127.90 |
| Himachal Pradesh | 16 | 16 | 126.87 |
| Jharkhand | 72 | 72 | 120.05 |
| Delhi | 38 | 38 | 116.89 |
| Maharashtra | 271 | 271 | 109.38 |
| West Bengal | 201 | 201 | 101.14 |
| Chhattisgarh | 56 | 56 | 98.12 |
| Punjab | 61 | 61 | 97.04 |
| Odisha | 92 | 92 | 96.78 |
| Gujarat | 136 | 136 | 92.37 |
| Andhra Pradesh | 109 | 109 | 92.09 |
| Karnataka | 134 | 134 | 86.12 |
| Jammu & Kashmir | 30 | 30 | 84.13 |
| Tamil Nadu | 210 | 210 | 76.66 |
| Assam | 75 | 75 | 75.42 |
| Telangana | 88 | 63 | 72.31 |
| Goa | 10 | 4 | 66.23 |
| Nagaland | 9 | 9 | 59.52 |
| Kerala | 111 | 103 | 58.98 |
| Tripura | 16 | 16 | 57.96 |
| Arunachal Pradesh | 4 | 4 | 57.42 |
| Meghalaya | 15 | 15 | 51.17 |
| Mizoram | 4 | 4 | 48.92 |
Same paper, same force, same category, same year: 137.35 in Rajasthan and 48.92 in Mizoram, a spread of 88 marks. Domicile does more to decide your chances than anything you control. Four states did not fill their unreserved BSF vacancies even below 75, because a state's candidates must also clear the ground and the medical.
Female, BSF, unreserved, general area
| State | Vacancies | Filled | Cut off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haryana | 11 | 11 | 138.50 |
| Rajasthan | 26 | 26 | 137.03 |
| Uttar Pradesh | 80 | 80 | 131.33 |
| Bihar | 47 | 47 | 122.78 |
| Delhi | 7 | 7 | 122.38 |
| West Bengal | 36 | 36 | 103.63 |
| Kerala | 20 | 3 | 96.99 |
Female cut offs run higher than male in the north and lower in the south. Haryana's 138.50 is the highest BSF figure in either table; Kerala filled 3 of 20.
These are normalised scores including NCC bonus, so you cannot work back to a number of correct answers. They are also last cycle's, against 15,654 BSF vacancies; this cycle notifies 616, so expect BSF cut offs markedly higher. A score short of the BSF line may still take you into another force from the same state, if your preference list allows.
Preparation Tips
Train for the race from day one
Last cycle 3,94,121 were called to the ground and 95,575 came through. Three in four went home there, not in the hall. 5 km in 24 minutes for men, 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds for women, and there is no appeal against the race. The gap between the written result and the ground was nine weeks, so this cannot start when the result comes out.
Check your height and chest now
170 cm and an 80 cm chest expanding 5 cm for a general category male. These cannot be trained into existence. If you fall into a relaxation category, the certificate must be in the Commission's proforma, from the competent authority, carried to the test. A claim alone gets nothing.
45 seconds a question is the real constraint
Eighty questions in sixty minutes, at Matriculation level, requiring no special study of any discipline. Time every practice paper from the start. A candidate who answers correctly in ninety seconds cannot answer that question in this examination.
Guess rather than leave blanks
+2 and −0.25 is a one eighth penalty. A blind guess among four is worth +0.31 on average. Candidates trained on papers with a one third penalty carry the wrong instinct in.
Spend your time on Part A and Part C
All four parts carry 40 marks but are not equally winnable. Reasoning is the first tie break and is principally non-verbal, so figure series and spatial questions repay drilling. Elementary Mathematics has the most closed syllabus in the paper. General Awareness is unbounded, so cover the named areas without chasing depth, and Part D is basic comprehension in whichever language you read faster.
Claim the NCC bonus if you have it
An NCC 'C' certificate is 8 marks, four questions, in a contest decided to two decimals. Tick the box in the form, because it cannot be added later, and carry the original to document verification or the bonus is withdrawn.
Know your own state's cut off
BSF's unreserved general area cut off ran from 48.92 in Mizoram to 137.35 in Rajasthan last cycle. A target from a coaching video or a friend in another state means nothing. Find your own row, then allow for BSF advertising 616 posts this cycle against 15,654 last.
Fill the form as carefully as you study
Eight force preferences, domicile state and district, and the NCC claim cannot be fixed afterwards. The domicile column is not the address box, and a mismatch at the medical cancels the candidature after eighteen months of work.
Watch two websites
The written admit card comes from the Commission's regional office; the physical test and medical cards come from CRPF.
Practise from the setter's own papers
Sit the Commission's past papers and its mock test in sixty minutes with no calculator; the mock also teaches the interface. SSC MTS and CHSL papers sit at a neighbouring level for extra practice, once you drop anything with algebra, trigonometry or data interpretation.
Sample Papers
The Staff Selection Commission publishes previous year question papers, and a walk-through video and mock test in the Candidate's Corner at ssc.gov.in. Each cycle's tentative answer key follows the paper, usually within three weeks. Nothing comes from BSF itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does BSF conduct its own Constable examination?
Not for General Duty Constables. That rank is filled entirely through the Staff Selection Commission's Constable (GD) examination, which recruits for BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, Assam Rifles, the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Secretariat Security Force in one go. BSF does advertise separately for tradesmen and specialists, but not for Constable (GD).
If I put BSF first, will I get BSF?
Not necessarily. You rank all eight organisations, and allocation is on merit cum preference, subject to the vacancies in your own state, area and category. BSF is 616 of 25,487 vacancies this cycle, about 2.4 per cent, while CISF alone is 57 per cent. No change of preference is allowed after submission.
What marks do I actually need?
The qualifying mark is 30 per cent for UR, 25 for OBC and EWS, 20 for SC, ST and ESM, out of 160. Nobody is selected on it. For BSF unreserved male candidates in general areas last cycle the real cut off ran from 48.92 in Mizoram to 137.35 in Rajasthan.
Why are the cut offs so different between states?
Vacancies are earmarked state and union territory wise, and within a state for Border Guarding and for Naxal or militancy affected districts. You compete only against candidates of your own domicile state, category and area. The domicile entered in the form cannot be changed afterwards, and a certificate from a different state produced at the medical cancels the candidature.
How hard is the physical test really?
5 km in 24 minutes for men, 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds for women, with easier standards only for candidates of the Ladakh region. Last cycle 3,94,121 were called and 95,575 came through. A failure on height or chest can be appealed the same day at the centre; the race cannot.
What is the salary?
Pay Level 3, ₹21,700 to ₹69,100, plus allowances, and identical in BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, SSF and Assam Rifles. Only NCB differs, at Level 1, ₹18,000 to ₹56,900.
I am in BSF's state quota. Will I be posted in my own state?
No. A recommended candidate is liable to serve anywhere in India. The state quota decides which pool you compete in, not where you serve.
How much does it cost to apply?
₹100, and nothing for women, SC, ST and eligible Ex-Servicemen. Corrections are charged separately to everyone: ₹200 for the first, ₹500 for the second, no third.
Where do I download my admit card?
From two different places, which is the commonest reason a candidate misses a stage. The written paper's card comes from your Commission regional office's website, three to seven days before. The cards for the physical tests, the medical and document verification come from CRPF, about two weeks before.
How long does the whole process take?
About sixteen months. Last cycle: notice 5 September 2024, paper 4 to 25 February 2025, written result 17 June 2025, physical tests 20 August to 15 September 2025, their result 13 October 2025, final result 15 January 2026.
What happens to vacancies that are not filled?
The forces carry them forward to the next cycle. There is no reserve list and no waiting list. Last cycle Telangana filled 63 of 88 unreserved BSF posts, Kerala 103 of 111 and Goa 4 of 10.
Does an NCC certificate help?
Substantially. A 'C' certificate adds 5 per cent of maximum marks, which is 8 marks here; 'B' adds 3 per cent and 'A' 2 per cent, all added to the normalised score before merit. Tick the claim in the form and produce the original at document verification. Ex-Servicemen do not receive it.
