CBSE Junior Assistant Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Junior Assistant is the entry clerical post of the Central Board of Secondary Education, a society under the Ministry of Education. It's Group C, Level-2 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, and the Board's Administrative Cadre has 260 sanctioned posts of it, the largest grade after Multi Tasking Staff.
CBSE recruits its own staff. This isn't an SSC exam. The Board writes the advertisement, sets the papers, runs the typing test and publishes cut-offs and select panels itself, all on the CBSE Recruitment page. The recruitment rules record UPSC consultation as not applicable.
The scheme changed this cycle. Under the advertisement of 31 December 2024, Junior Assistant was a single MCQ exam plus a typing test, and 70 posts were filled that way. Direct Recruitment Quota Examination 2026 (DRQ2026), advertised on 2 December 2025, added a descriptive Tier-2 of essay, letter and precis.
| Junior Assistant, Post Code 09/25 | |
|---|---|
| Group and level | Group C, Pay Level-2 |
| Vacancies | 35 (UR 14, OBC-NCL 10, SC 05, ST 03, EWS 03), with 01 earmarked for PwBD and 05 for ex-servicemen |
| Maximum age | 27 years on 22 December 2025 |
| Essential qualification | 12th Class or equivalent and typing at 35 w.p.m. in English or 30 w.p.m. in Hindi on computer |
| Stages | Tier-1 MCQ on OMR, Tier-2 descriptive, qualifying typing test. No interview. |
| Registered for Tier-1 | 26,353, of whom 16,057 were women |
| Appeared at Tier-1 | 13,298 |
| Applicants per post | 753 registered, 380 who actually sat |
Tier-1 was held on 1 February 2026, Tier-2 on 26 April, the Tier-2 result came on 15 May and the skill test on 11 July 2026. No select panel had been published when the page was last checked.
Junior Assistant had the highest Tier-1 cut-off of all nine posts in DRQ2026: 250 out of 300 for UR, above Superintendent (241) and the Group A Assistant Secretary (236). A big field and a 1:10 shortlist do that.

Exam Pattern
Two written stages and a typing test. Shortlisting is 1:10 from Tier-1 to Tier-2, then 1:5 from Tier-2 to the skill test.
Tier-1: objective, on OMR
| Part | Component | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Current Affairs, General Awareness | 20 | 60 |
| II | General Mental Ability, General Intelligence, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability | 20 | 60 |
| III | Arithmetical and Numerical Ability, Data Interpretation | 20 | 60 |
| IV | General Hindi Comprehension and Communication Skill | 10 | 30 |
| V | General English Comprehension and Communication Skill | 10 | 30 |
| VI | Basic Knowledge of Computer Proficiency | 20 | 60 |
| Total, in 2 hours | 100 | 300 | |
+3 for a right answer, −1 for a wrong one, nothing for a blank. Two bubbles darkened counts as wrong. Level: Secondary (Class 10). Hindi and English are both compulsory, not a choice.
Tier-2: descriptive only
| Part | Component | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Essay, 200 to 250 words, Hindi or English | 1 | 50 |
| II | Application or letter, 150 to 200 words, Hindi or English | 1 | 50 |
| III | Precis, English only | 2 | 50 |
| Total, in 2 hours 15 minutes | 4 | 150 | |
Level: Senior Secondary. Every other post's Tier-2 in DRQ2026 mixes OMR and written answers; this one is written only.
Skill test
Typing at 35 w.p.m. in English or 30 w.p.m. in Hindi on computer (10,500 or 9,000 key depressions per hour, at five per word). Qualifying only: it adds no marks, and failing ends your candidature.
Two rules across all stages
- 30 per cent floor. Below 30 per cent in any tier (90 of 300, 45 of 150), you're out, in every category including PwBD.
- Category cut-offs are derived: 5 per cent below UR for OBC and EWS, 10 per cent below for SC, ST and PwBD, with power to go lower if too few candidates qualify.
Junior Accountant (08/25) and Junior Assistant (09/25) sat one common Tier-1 paper. If you applied for both, with a separate form and fee for each, one score counted for both. Tier-2 papers are different.
Syllabus
CBSE gives the syllabus as a component-and-marks table in the advertisement, not a topic list.
Tier-1, level: Secondary
| Part | Component as the Board names it | Marks | Share of the paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Current Affairs, General Awareness | 60 | 20 per cent |
| II | General Mental Ability, General Intelligence, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability | 60 | 20 per cent |
| III | Arithmetical and Numerical Ability, Data Interpretation | 60 | 20 per cent |
| IV | General Hindi, Comprehension and Communication Skill | 30 | 10 per cent |
| V | General English, Comprehension and Communication Skill | 30 | 10 per cent |
| VI | Basic Knowledge of Computer Proficiency | 60 | 20 per cent |
Computers weigh as much as reasoning or arithmetic. In the previous cycle's papers this part is titled "Basic Knowledge of Computer Operation". Nothing on the paper is about school education or the Board itself.
Tier-2, level: Senior Secondary
- Essay, 200 to 250 words, 50 marks, Hindi or English. One question.
- Application or letter, 150 to 200 words, 50 marks, Hindi or English. Office correspondence, which is the job.
- Precis, two questions, 50 marks, English only.
Medium
Papers are bilingual, Hindi and English, except the language parts. Where versions differ, English prevails.
There's no subject paper (Junior Accountant has an accounting Tier-2; Junior Assistant doesn't), and no re-evaluation of OMR sheets or scripts. The paid answer-key window after Tier-1 is the only challenge route.
Eligibility Criteria
From the Recruitment Rules of 15 June 2023, repeated in DRQ2026. The crucial date for everything is 22 December 2025, the original closing date. The deadline was later extended to 27 December, but the eligibility date stayed put.
| Requirement | |
|---|---|
| Essential qualification | (i) 12th Class or equivalent from a recognised Board or University; (ii) typing at 35 w.p.m. in English or 30 w.p.m. in Hindi on computer |
| Age | 18 to 27 years |
| Nationality | Citizen of India |
| Classification | Group C, Non-Selection post |
| Result declared by | 22 December 2025. Final-year students and anyone awaiting a result can't apply. |
Typing is part of the qualification, not just a test. The skill test checks a speed you were meant to have when you applied.
Age relaxation
| Category | Relaxation beyond the upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC (NCL) Central List | 3 years |
| PwBD, unreserved, including women | 10 years |
| PwBD, OBC (NCL) Central List, including women | 13 years |
| PwBD, SC or ST, including women | 15 years |
| Women | 10 years |
| Ex-servicemen | Military service is deducted from actual age; the remainder may exceed 27 by up to three years. Not for dependants. |
| The Board's own regular employees | No bar |
The ten years for women, with the fee waiver, shows in the numbers: 16,057 of 26,353 registrations were women.
Ex-servicemen
A matriculate ex-serviceman (including one with the Indian Army Special Certificate of Education or its Navy or Air Force equivalent) qualifies for ESM vacancies in Group C only with at least 15 years of service, completed by the closing date or within one year of it.
Certificates
- OBC uses the Central List. The NCL certificate must be valid on 22 December 2025 and renewed if over a year old at document verification.
- EWS: certificate for financial year 2024-25, valid for 2025-26.
- PwBD: at least 40 per cent disability, certificate in Forms V, VI or VII under rule 18(1) of the RPwD Rules 2017. The earmarked category for this post is deaf and hard of hearing; it's also identified as suitable for blindness and low vision, locomotor disability, autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disability, mental illness and multiple disabilities.
- Without a valid certificate you lose the claim, not the candidature: you're considered as UR if UR posts exist.
- Spell names as on your Class X marks sheet; it's the only accepted proof of date of birth.
Selection Process
- Tier-1: MCQ on OMR, 100 questions, 300 marks.
- Tier-2: descriptive, 150 marks. Called at 1:10 on Tier-1 marks.
- Skill test: typing, qualifying. Called at 1:5 on Tier-2 marks.
Merit rests on Tier-2. No interview.
How DRQ2026 thinned the field
| Stage | Junior Assistant |
|---|---|
| Vacancies advertised | 35 |
| Registered for Tier-1 | 26,353 (10,296 men, 16,057 women) |
| Appeared at Tier-1 | 13,298 (5,173 men, 8,125 women) |
| Attendance | 50 per cent |
| Registered for Tier-2 | 422 |
| Appeared at Tier-2 | 301 |
| Attendance at Tier-2 | 71 per cent |
About 3.2 per cent of those who sat Tier-1 went through.
Unfilled vacancies
Across all nine posts, CBSE could shortlist against only 101 of 124 vacancies; 23 went unfilled after the 30 per cent floor and the 1:5 ratio. For Junior Assistant the gap was only in the ex-servicemen quota:
| Category | Notified | Needed at 1:5 | Eligible found | Vacancies the ratio could cover | Left unfilled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Assistant, ESM | 5 | 25 | 10 | 2 | 3 |
Ties
Older candidate first, then alphabetical order of names.
What ends a candidature
- Unfair means: disqualification, a two-year debarment, cancelled result and possible prosecution. That covers impersonation, prohibited items, helping another candidate, forced entry or exit, and tampered admit cards or morphed photos.
- More than one application for the same post. Anyone rejected for multiple forms under the advertisement of 8 March 2024 may be barred from DRQ2026.
- Changing your own seat or room.
- OMR answer patterns too similar to another candidate's.
Selection stays provisional until documents are verified, and false information means termination at any stage, even after confirmation.
Salary
Level-2 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, Group C (Pay Band-1, ₹5,200 to ₹20,200, grade pay ₹1,900 under the 6th CPC), plus central allowances at your posting city's rates. Service is governed by the CBSE Service Rules 1985.
Probation
2 years, with mandatory training of at least 2 weeks that you must pass to complete it. You can be let go during probation on 30 days' notice or a month's pay in lieu, and probation can be extended.
The ladder
The Administrative Cadre was restructured on 15 June 2023 and has 1,316 posts.
| Post | Level | Sanctioned | How it is filled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi Tasking Staff | Level-1 | 239 | 100 per cent direct recruitment |
| Junior Assistant | Level-2 | 260 | 85 per cent direct; 10 per cent departmental exam; 5 per cent seniority-cum-fitness |
| Assistant Record Keeper | Level-2 | 16 | 100 per cent promotion, failing which direct |
| Senior Assistant | Level-4 | 258 | 75 per cent promotion; 25 per cent direct |
| Superintendent | Level-6 | 228 | 100 per cent promotion |
| Section Officer | Level-7 | 140 | 100 per cent promotion |
| Assistant Secretary | Level-10 | 60 | two-thirds promotion; one-third direct |
Promotion to Senior Assistant needs four years' regular service and confirmation; four more gets you to Superintendent. Above that: Section Officer, Assistant Secretary, Under, Deputy and Joint Secretary, and the Level-13A posts.
The internal 15 per cent: 10 per cent by departmental exam for the Board's Group C staff at grade pay ₹1,800 who are 12th pass with three years' service (age limit 45, or 50 for SC and ST), and 5 per cent by seniority-cum-fitness from the same pool. The DPC is chaired by the Secretary, CBSE.

The previous cycle: advertisement CBSE/Rectt.Cell/14(87)/SA/2024 on 31 December 2024 for 70 posts, one MCQ exam on 20 April 2025, typing test 3 to 5 July 2025, select panel 29 August 2025.
CBSE has no fixed recruitment calendar. Two cycles came thirteen months apart, both advertised in December, so watch the Recruitment page from late in the year. The DRQ2026 window was open for under a month.
Admit Card
Download the admit card from the CBSE website with your application login. Nothing is posted. The exam city is announced by a separate notice about two weeks ahead, and the admit card follows a few days before the exam.
An admit card doesn't confirm eligibility; you can still be rejected later. Errors in name, photo, signature or category can't be corrected; only date, centre or city problems can be raised. Keep the card: CBSE holds response sheets for only two months after the result.
PwBD candidates claiming relaxation also bring the disability certificate, the certificate of physical limitation where needed, and the scribe undertaking, in the prescribed forms.
Result
Results are signed notices on the Recruitment page, with full tables inside. Your own marks are in your login.
The Tier-1 result (2 March 2026) covered 179,656 registered and 94,090 appeared across all posts. For Junior Assistant:
| SC | ST | OBC (NCL) | EWS | UR | PwBD | ESM | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Registered, men | 3,905 | 1,194 | 1,767 | 348 | 2,101 | 439 | 542 | 10,296 |

| Appeared, men | 1,803 | 526 | 1,062 | 198 | 1,146 | 199 | 239 | 5,173 |
| Appeared, women | 1,346 | 268 | 2,217 | 512 | 3,723 | 59 | 0 | 8,125 |
The previous cycle's panel listed candidates by application and roll number, category by category, without marks. CBSE also posts cancellation-of-candidature notices after document checks. There's no re-evaluation, and a medical fitness declaration is needed before appointment.
Cut Off
CBSE publishes post-wise, category-wise shortlisting cut-offs in each tier's result notice.
DRQ2026 Tier-1, out of 300
| Post | UR | EWS | OBC | SC | ST | PwBD | ESM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Assistant | 250 | 236 | 238 | 240 | 220 | 150 | 191 |
| Junior Accountant | 228 | 211 | 212 | 212 | 192 | 127 | 100 |
| Superintendent | 241 | 233 | 231 | 224 | 207 | 192 | − |
| Assistant Secretary | 236 | 221 | 224 | 214 | − | 166 | − |
| Accounts Officer | 210 | − | − | − | − | − | − |
| Junior Translation Officer | 161 | − | 156 | 138 | 122 | 97 | − |
Same paper, but Junior Assistant drew 26,353 registrations for 35 posts against Junior Accountant's 4,284 for 16, hence the 22-mark gap.
DRQ2026 Tier-2, out of 150
| Post | UR | EWS | OBC | SC | ST | PwBD | ESM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Assistant | 109 | 95 | 88 | 84 | 68 | 76 | 60 |
| Junior Accountant | 132 | 100 | 111 | 101 | 95 | 98 | 93 |
| Superintendent | 144 | 128 | 123 | 115 | 111 | 113 | − |
| Assistant Secretary | 156 | 105 | 133 | 136 | − | 124 | − |
109 of 150 is 73 per cent on four handwritten answers; the UR to ST spread is 41 marks. The other posts' Tier-2 papers include an objective half, so the figures don't compare directly.
Preparation Tips
1. Don't guess blind
At +3 and −1, a blind guess among four options is worth 0.00 on average. Knock out one option and it's worth +0.33; knock out two and it's +1.00. Guess only when you can eliminate.
2. Accuracy beats attempts
250 of 300 is 83 per cent: roughly 85 right with no more than five wrong, or 84 right and two wrong. Ninety attempts at 85 per cent accuracy clears it; at 78 per cent it doesn't.
3. Bank the computer section
Sixty marks, narrow and stable scope: basic operation, hardware and software, operating systems, office applications. It can be made near-perfect.
4. Work on your weaker language
Thirty marks each of Hindi and English at Tier-1, then a 50-mark English precis at Tier-2.
5. Drill Tier-2 by writing
Stick to the word limits. Learn the standard office letter formats. Practise precis first: condense, keep every point, drop examples and repetition, third person, past tense, add a title.
6. Build typing speed from the day you apply
Failing the typing test ends a candidature that has survived a 1:10 and a 1:5 screen. For Hindi, practise in the input method you'll actually get, not a transliteration tool.
7. Use the answer-key window carefully
After Tier-1 the OMR sheet and keys are shown for two to three days. Challenges cost ₹1,000 per question, non-refundable, and only the paid online route counts.
8. Practise with CBSE's own papers
See Sample Papers. Mind the scheme change noted there.
Sample Papers
CBSE publishes real recruitment papers. On 28 February 2025 it released Tier-1 papers (four sets per post, A1 to A4 and so on) and Tier-2 papers. They cover Assistant Secretary, Accounts Officer, Junior Engineer, Junior Translation Officer, Accountant and Junior Accountant.
There's no Junior Assistant paper in them. The closest is Junior Accountant, which shared this post's Tier-1 in DRQ2026. For Junior Assistant itself CBSE published the final answer key of 14 May 2025.
Those papers follow the 2024 scheme: 150 questions in two and a half hours, two marks each, 0.5 off for a wrong answer. DRQ2026 is 100 questions in two hours at +3 and −1. Use them for content, not timing.
