BDL Trainee Engineer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
114 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Bharat Dynamics Limited is a Miniratna Category-I defence public sector enterprise, incorporated in 1970 under the Ministry of Defence. It began with anti-tank guided missiles and now builds later-generation ATGMs, strategic weapons, launchers, underwater weapons, decoys and test equipment for all three services.
Know first what Trainee Engineer is not. It is not a regular post, and the advertisement says so: "The contract employee shall not make any claim for regular employment in BDL, since the appointment is purely contractual and for specified period. They are not entitled for regular employment."
The engagement runs one year, extendable yearly to four, with a further term of up to four more at BDL's discretion on pay decided then. Pay is a consolidated monthly figure, and beyond it and one annual allowance contract employees get no other benefit or facility. BDL's regular executive entry is the Management Trainee, advertised separately.
What was advertised
Advertisement No. BDL/C-HR (TA & CP)/2025-3 of 15 July 2025 notified 212 posts across thirteen titles, in two tiers.

Trainee Engineer alone is 100 of the 212, half of them Electronics, which is what a missile house would want most of. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities are provided for horizontally: four posts in each tier, one each for the four disability groups, except that the degree tier carries two for blindness and low vision.
A selected candidate may be posted to the Corporate Office at Gachibowli, Hyderabad, the Kanchanbagh Unit, Hyderabad, the Bhanur Unit in Sangareddy district, the Visakhapatnam Unit, the Ibrahimpatnam Unit in Ranga Reddy district, the Liaison Office in New Delhi, or new project locations anywhere in India.

BDL Trainee Engineer Details
Exam Pattern
One Computer Based Online Test and one interview, with most of the weight on the test.
| Feature | BDL CBoT, Advt. 2025-3 |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer Based Online Test |
| Questions | 120 |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Subject or discipline questions | 100 |
| General Aptitude | 20, covering Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning and General English |
| Marking | 1 mark a question, −0.25 for a wrong answer |
| Weightage | 85 per cent written test, 15 per cent interview |
| Qualifying marks | 50 per cent for all; 40 per cent for OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD where the vacancy is reserved for that category |
| Interview ratio | 1:7, up to 1:10, in order of merit in each category |
One hundred of the 120 questions are on the discipline and only twenty on general aptitude. That is an unusually technical paper for public sector recruitment: a Trainee Engineer is examined almost entirely on the engineering degree they hold.
The penalty arrived after the advertisement
The advertisement of 15 July 2025 set out the selection process with no marking scheme. On 31 July 2025, sixteen days later and with the window still open, Addendum No. 1 added paragraph 6.8: one mark a question and 0.25 deducted for every wrong answer. Candidates who applied in the first fortnight did so not knowing there would be a penalty, and at BDL it is the addendum, not the advertisement, that carries the current position.
The test moved, and split into four sessions
The advertisement gave 24 August 2025 as tentative. On 20 August BDL notified that for administrative reasons it would run over two days in four sessions, each discipline fixed to one.
| Date | 10:00 to 12:00 | 14:30 to 16:30 |
|---|---|---|
| 30 August 2025 | Trainee Engineer and Trainee Diploma Assistant (Computer Science); Trainee Officer (Human Resource, Finance, Business Development) | Trainee Engineer and Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical); Trainee Assistant (Finance, Human Resource) |
| 31 August 2025 | Trainee Engineer and Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electronics) | Trainee Engineer and Trainee Diploma Assistant (Mechanical) |
The degree and diploma streams of a discipline sit the same session, and a candidate may apply for only one post anyway.
The interview is 15 per cent of the final marks, with candidates called seven per post, raised to ten at BDL's discretion, in category-wise merit order. The 2025 interviews ran from 8 to 16 October at the Kanchanbagh Unit, Hyderabad. No travelling or dearness allowance is paid for the test, the interview or joining duty, and there are only two test cities in the country: Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
Syllabus
BDL publishes a weightage rather than a topic list, and the weightage says most of what a candidate needs.
| Component | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Subject or discipline | 100 | 83 per cent |
| General Aptitude: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, General English | 20 | 17 per cent |
| Total | 120 |
No general awareness, no current affairs, no defence-specific section. Five questions in six are on your own discipline.
What the discipline half covers
BDL publishes no topic list. The paper is set at the level of the qualification the post demands, a B.E. or B.Tech. in the named branch, and the best published proxy for a degree-level objective paper at that level is the GATE syllabus in that branch.
| Discipline | Core areas to expect at degree level |
|---|---|
| Electronics | Networks and signals, electronic devices, analog and digital circuits, control systems, communications, electromagnetics, microprocessors and microcontrollers, measurement and instrumentation |
| Mechanical | Engineering mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, vibrations, machine design, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, manufacturing and machining, industrial engineering, metrology |
| Electrical | Electric circuits, electromagnetic fields, signals and systems, electrical machines, power systems, control systems, measurements, analog and digital electronics, power electronics |
| Computer Science | Digital logic, computer organisation and architecture, programming and data structures, algorithms, theory of computation, compiler design, operating systems, databases, computer networks |
Those lists are drawn from what a degree in each branch covers, not from anything BDL has published. Check the advertisement for your own cycle.
The branches BDL treats as equivalent
This part is published, and it decides who can apply at all.
| Discipline | Degrees BDL accepts as equivalent |
|---|---|
| Electronics | Electronics; Electronics & Communication; Electronics & Instrumentation; Electronics Design & Technology; Applied Electronics; Electronics & Telecommunication; Electronics & Control |
| Mechanical | Mechanical; Industrial and Production; Mechanical Production and Tool; Production; Production Technology Manufacturing; Production and Industrial; Manufacturing Technology; Aerospace; Aeronautical |
| Electrical | Electrical; Electrical & Electronics; Electrical, Instrumentation & Control |
| Computer Science | Computer Science Engineering; Information Technology |
Two entries run the opposite way to several other defence and atomic-energy recruiters. BDL accepts Aerospace and Aeronautical against Mechanical, and Information Technology against Computer Science. Candidates from those branches should check this list rather than assume the exclusion they have met elsewhere.
The twenty aptitude marks
Roughly seven questions each of Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning and General English: percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed and distance, mensuration and simple data interpretation; series, analogy, classification, coding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and syllogism; grammar, error spotting, vocabulary, sentence improvement and a short comprehension. Twenty of 120 can decide a close contest but will not rescue a weak subject paper.
The Diploma and Assistant tiers follow the same 100 and 20 split, with the 100 set at the level of their own qualification.
Eligibility Criteria
Trainee Engineer: the degree
| Requirement | Standard |
|---|---|
| Qualification | B.E. or B.Tech. in Engineering or equivalent in the concerned discipline: Electronics, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Science |
| Marks | 55 per cent and above, aggregate of all semesters or years |
| Marks, for SC, ST and PwBD | 50 per cent and above, but only against a post reserved for that category |
| Recognition | By the State or Central Government, UGC or AICTE as applicable |
Read the second and third rows together. An SC, ST or PwBD candidate applying against an unreserved post is judged by the general standard. The 50 per cent concession attaches to the reserved vacancy, not to the candidate.
Two arithmetic rules end applications. No rounding, in BDL's own example: "49.99% will not be considered as 50%." And CGPA converts by the university's own norm, with documentary proof. Without that proof BDL divides the CGPA by the scale maximum and multiplies by 100, which is usually less generous than the university's multiplier.
Age
28 years for UR and EWS on the closing date, which for Advertisement 2025-3 was 10 August 2025.
| Category | Upper age |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 28 |
| OBC (NCL) | 31 |
| SC and ST | 33 |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | +10 years, over and above any SC, ST or OBC relaxation |
| Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers including ECOs and SSCOs | +5 years, subject to at least 5 years of service |
| Domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir between 1980 and 1989 | +5 years, on producing a domicile certificate |
Each relaxation applies only against a vacancy reserved for that category, so where a post carries no vacancy for a category the age reverts to 28.
The certificates BDL will and will not accept
- Only the Central Government list counts for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and EWS. A caste listed in your state but not centrally is treated as Unreserved.
- Certificates must be in the prescribed Government of India proforma. An application without a valid one in that format is rejected.
- An OBC (NCL) certificate must be issued on or after 1 April of the recruitment year. An OBC candidate outside the non-creamy layer applies as General.
- An EWS Income and Asset Certificate must be valid for the current financial year, based on verification for the previous one.
- A PwBD certificate needs disability of 40 per cent or more, in Forms V, VI or VII under Rule 18(1) of the RPwD Rules 2017. Certificates under the repealed 1995 Act stay valid for the period stated in them.
- Anything not in English or Hindi needs a self-certified translation.
Other conditions
- One post only, one application only.
- Serving government or public sector employees apply through proper channel, or produce a No Objection Certificate at the interview.
- A candidate who took the degree after a diploma must mention the diploma on the form, and a degree that does not name the required specialisation needs a university certificate naming it.
- The date the result was declared or the mark sheet issued is the date the qualification was acquired, with no relaxation.
- Appointment follows verification of qualifications, category and character and antecedents, and being declared medically fit. All posts require good communication skills, stated as a condition rather than a preference.
Selection Process
Four steps, with the written test carrying most of the weight.
- Initial screening of applications against the eligibility criteria.
- Computer Based Online Test, 120 questions in two hours, for those who clear screening.
- Interview, for candidates called in the ratio of 7 per post, up to 10.
- Final merit on 85 per cent written test and 15 per cent interview, then verification and a medical.
The two thresholds
| Threshold | What it is |
|---|---|
| Qualifying marks | 50 per cent of the written test for all candidates, and 40 per cent for OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD candidates where a vacancy is reserved for that category |
| Interview call | Qualified candidates are called at 1:7, maximum 1:10, in order of merit within each category, with the final ratio fixed by BDL Management on the number who qualified |
On a 120-question paper that is 60 marks and 48 marks. Those two numbers explain most of the published cut-off table, which is set out under Cut-off Details: in 2025 seven of the thirteen posts closed at or within a fraction of the qualifying mark, while Electrical in both tiers closed far above it.
After the interview
Final marks are 85 per cent test and 15 per cent interview. Appointment is then subject to verification of educational and technical qualifications, memberships, category and disability certificates and experience; verification of character and antecedents; and being declared medically fit under the Company's policy.
BDL adds that applying and meeting the qualifications "will not entail a right for claiming Written Test / Interview / appointment", that a candidate not meeting the essential criteria can be debarred at any stage, and that false or incomplete information terminates the candidature or the appointment at any stage, including after joining, without reference to the candidate.
Disputes go only to the courts, tribunals and forums at Ranga Reddy district, Telangana, which the advertisement gives sole and exclusive jurisdiction. Canvassing disqualifies.
Salary
BDL fixes a consolidated monthly figure for each year of the contract, not a pay scale, and it rises on each extension.
| Post | 1st year | 2nd year | 3rd year | 4th year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trainee Engineer and Trainee Officer | ₹29,500 | ₹32,500 | ₹35,500 | ₹38,500 |
| Trainee Diploma Assistant and Trainee Assistant | ₹24,500 | ₹26,000 | ₹27,500 | ₹29,000 |
Each year beyond the first depends on the contract being extended.
One payment sits on top: ₹10,000 a year towards medical insurance premium, attire allowance, stitching charges and footwear, paid half with the first month's salary and half after eleven months.
Then the sentence that defines the package: "Apart from the mentioned remuneration and benefits, the contract employees will not be eligible for any other benefit / facilities." No dearness allowance, no house rent allowance, no provident fund contribution, no gratuity, no leave travel concession, no pension.
The tenure
| Stage | What the advertisement says |
|---|---|
| Initial engagement | One year, on contract |
| Extension | Yearly, to a maximum of four years including the first, on organisational requirement and individual performance |
| A further term | Another four years on yearly extension may follow, with remuneration decided at that time |
| Regular employment | No claim may be made. The appointment is purely contractual and for a specified period |
Eight years at BDL's discretion, then, with the pay for years five to eight unstated and no route into the regular cadre. That cadre is entered as a Management Trainee, advertised separately, most recently under Advertisement No. 2025-4 of 28 November 2025.
How to Apply
Strictly online, through the HR section of bdl-india.in. No manual or paper application is entertained, including from candidates sponsored by a local employment exchange, who apply online like everyone else.
Fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| UR, EWS and OBC (NCL) | ₹300, excluding convenience fee and taxes |
| SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen | Exempt, on uploading the valid category certificate |
Payment is through SBI e-Pay by card, net banking or UPI. A registration without the fee, or with a lesser amount, or paid by any other mode, is rejected. The fee is non-refundable, and a fee paid by an ineligible candidate is forfeited with no correspondence entertained.
One application, and no edits
A candidate may apply against only one post and only once. BDL states that "applications once submitted cannot be altered under any circumstances".
Documents to have scanned before you start
A photograph taken in the last three months and a signature; proof of date of birth; the SC, ST, OBC (NCL), EWS or PwBD certificate in the prescribed Government of India format, with a scribe certificate where needed; a discharge or domicile certificate where claimed; qualification certificates and semester-wise mark sheets for class 10, class 12, any diploma and the degree; and, for a CGPA degree, a university certificate stating the equivalent percentage. Anything not in Hindi or English needs a self-certified translation.
Send nothing to BDL. Save the registration slip and bring it with the originals to the interview. Keep the email address and mobile number live for twelve months, though the website is the channel of record.
BDL also reserves the right to increase or decrease vacancies, to cancel a post or the advertisement without notice, to fill or not fill the posts, and to raise or lower the minimum eligibility criteria to restrict the number called. The eligibility bar itself can move after the advertisement, depending on the response.
Participating Institutes
Bharat Dynamics Limited is the sole recruiting body. It runs the test and the interview itself, with no commission involved.
| Incorporated | 1970 |
| Ministry | Ministry of Defence, Government of India |
| Status | Miniratna Category-I public sector enterprise |
| Corporate office | Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500032 |
| Recruiting department | Corporate HR, Talent Acquisition & Career Progression |
| Queries | bdl-recruitment@bdl-india.in, with the advertisement number in the subject line |
The units you could be posted to
| Location | Where |
|---|---|
| Corporate Office | Gachibowli, Hyderabad, Telangana |
| Kanchanbagh Unit | Hyderabad, Telangana, where the 2025 interviews were held |
| Bhanur Unit | Sangareddy district, Telangana |
| Visakhapatnam Unit | Andhra Pradesh |
| Ibrahimpatnam Unit | Ranga Reddy district, Telangana |
| Liaison Office | New Delhi |
| New project locations | Anywhere in India, as the Company requires |
Five of the seven are in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, which is also why the test is held only at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
Everything lives on one page, bdl-india.in/recruitments, which lists every notification, addendum, schedule, shortlist and selection list in date order. BDL notifies shortlists and final selections on its website only. The HR manual and Recruitment Rules that govern the process are published separately.
Exam Centres
BDL holds the Computer Based Online Test at two places: Hyderabad and its surroundings, and Visakhapatnam. That is the whole list, for a national recruitment of 212 posts.
You name one on the application form and BDL asks you to pick the nearer to your present address. The Company reserves the right to modify, add or cancel a centre depending on numbers, and to reassign candidates.
The interview is separate, and in 2025 ran from 8 to 16 October at the Kanchanbagh Unit, Hyderabad. BDL pays no travelling or dearness allowance for the test, the interview or joining duty, which for an outstation candidate is three trips to Telangana or coastal Andhra at their own cost.
Sessions are fixed by discipline
| Session | Disciplines |
|---|---|
| 30 August, morning | TE and TDA (Computer Science); TO (Human Resource, Finance, Business Development) |
| 30 August, afternoon | TE and TDA (Electrical); TA (Finance, Human Resource) |
| 31 August, morning | TE and TDA (Electronics) |
| 31 August, afternoon | TE and TDA (Mechanical) |
The test centre, city and reporting time are all on the admit card, not on any earlier notice. And the date can move: in 2025 it went from 24 August to 30 and 31 August, notified four days before the original date and only on the Company's website.
Important Dates
BDL has no annual calendar. It advertises when it needs people, and the 2025 Trainee Engineer cycle ran fast by public sector standards: advertisement to selection list in under four months.
Advertisement No. BDL/C-HR (TA & CP)/2025-3
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Advertisement issued | 15 July 2025 |
| Online registration opens | 17 July 2025, 14:00 |
| Addendum No. 1 adding the marking scheme | 31 July 2025 |
| Online registration closes | 10 August 2025, 16:00 |
| Crucial date for age and qualification | 10 August 2025 |
| Admit card download, as first notified | 18 August 2025, 16:00 |
| Tentative date of the written test | 24 August 2025 |
| Revised schedule notified | 20 August 2025 |
| Computer Based Online Test held | 30 and 31 August 2025 |
| Shortlist for interview, with the cut-off table | 29 September 2025 |
| Interviews at the Kanchanbagh Unit, Hyderabad | 8 to 16 October 2025 |
| Selected candidates notified | 10 November 2025 |
Everything here is short: 26 days from advertisement to closing, 20 more to the test, four weeks to the shortlist, nine days from shortlist to interview. Two dates moved, the marking scheme arriving on 31 July while applications were open and the test shifting from 24 to 30 and 31 August.
The crucial date is the closing date. Age and qualification are both reckoned on it, and the date a result was declared is the date the qualification was acquired, with no relaxation. A degree awarded a day late does not count.
Watch only BDL's recruitments page. In this cycle the marking scheme, the changed test date and the cut-off table all appeared there and nowhere else.
Admit Card
Downloaded from bdl-india.in under HR, then Recruitment. Nothing is sent by post.
Only candidates who clear the initial screening get one. The advertisement says the written test is "for shortlisted candidates based on initial screening of applications", and the screening runs on what the online form says, with the onus on the candidate to prove it later.
The test centre, city and reporting time are all on the admit card. Notices published before it name only the date and the session for each discipline.
| Event | Date in 2025 |
|---|---|
| Admit card link, as first announced | 18 August 2025, 16:00 |
| Revised schedule, with the link re-notified | 20 August 2025 |
| Test | 30 and 31 August 2025 |
So the working notice was about ten days, in a recruitment with two test cities in the country. Keep the email address and mobile number live for twelve months: the call letters for both the test and the interview go there, though BDL treats the website as the channel of record.
Result
BDL publishes results as dated PDF notices on its recruitments page, and notifies shortlists and final selections on the Company's website only.
Two documents appear. The shortlist for interview, whose first page carries the discipline-wise and category-wise cut-off marks, and the list of selected candidates. The 2025 shortlist came on 29 September and the selection list on 10 November, six weeks after the interviews began. The cut-off table itself is reproduced under Cut-off Details.
What BDL does not publish: candidate-wise marks, an answer key, or an objection window against a provisional key.
Selection is conditional. Appointment follows verification of qualifications, memberships, category and disability certificates and experience, verification of character and antecedents, and being declared medically fit. Information found false or incomplete at any stage, including after joining, revokes the appointment without any reference given to the candidate.
Cut Off
BDL prints a full discipline-wise and category-wise cut-off table on the first page of its interview shortlist. Very few recruiters do, which makes this one of the easier public sector competitions to plan against.
The two numbers to hold
The paper is 120 questions of one mark each, so:
| Qualifying standard | In marks |
|---|---|
| 50 per cent, for all candidates | 60 |
| 40 per cent, for OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD against a reserved vacancy | 48 |
Where the 2025 shortlist closed, out of 120
| Post and discipline | Posts | UR | OBC (NCL) | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trainee Engineer (Electronics) | 50 | 60 | 48.25 | 48.25 | 48.25 |
| Trainee Engineer (Mechanical) | 30 | 60 | 48 | 48.50 | 48 |
| Trainee Engineer (Electrical) | 10 | 77 | 65 | 70 | 61 |
| Trainee Engineer (Computer Science) | 10 | 65.75 | 53.25 | 50 | 48.25 |
| Trainee Officer (Finance) | 5 | 63.75 | 52.50 | 54.75 | – |
| Trainee Officer (Human Resource) | 4 | 70 | 60.75 | 57.25 | – |
| Trainee Officer (Business Development) | 3 | 61.25 | 48.50 | – | 50 |
| Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electronics) | 40 | 60.25 | 48 | 48.75 | – |
| Trainee Diploma Assistant (Mechanical) | 30 | 60.25 | 48 | 56.25 | 51.25 |
| Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical) | 10 | 82.75 | 65.75 | 56.25 | 72.50 |
| Trainee Diploma Assistant (Computer Science) | 10 | 60 | 48 | 49.50 | 52.50 |
| Trainee Assistant (Finance) | 5 | 60 | 50 | 65 | – |
| Trainee Assistant (Human Resource) | 5 | 60 | 50.50 | – | – |
A dash means BDL printed no figure, which corresponds to a post with no vacancy reserved for that category. EWS figures were printed only where an EWS candidate reached the shortlist: Trainee Engineer (Electrical) 60, Trainee Engineer (Computer Science) 61.50, Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical) 65. PwBD cut-offs were set by tier rather than discipline: 43.00 for the degree tier, 45.25 for the diploma tier.
Three things the table shows
Most disciplines closed at the qualifying mark. Seven of thirteen posts show an Unreserved cut-off of 60 or 60.25, and most reserved figures land on 48 or just above. The shortlist was limited by the qualifying mark, not the ratio: there were not enough candidates above 50 per cent to fill seven per post. In those disciplines, clearing the qualifying mark was effectively enough to be interviewed.
Electrical is a different competition. 77 for Trainee Engineer (Electrical) and 82.75 for Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical), against ten posts each, in the same paper format. An Electrical candidate needed roughly 17 to 23 marks more than an Electronics one.
A reserved cut-off can sit above the unreserved one. Trainee Assistant (Finance) closed at 65 for SC against 60 for Unreserved, Trainee Engineer (Electrical) at 70 for SC against 65 for OBC, Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical) at 72.50 for ST against 65.75 for OBC. Where a category carries one or two posts out of ten, its own merit list can close higher than the general one.
These are the marks at which BDL stopped calling candidates for interview, not the final selection marks, since the interview then contributes 15 per cent and reorders the list. BDL does not publish the closing marks of the final selection, and cut-offs are per advertisement. What carries over is the structure: a 120-mark paper, a 50 and 40 per cent floor, a 1:7 ratio, and a deep field closing far above the floor while a shallow one closes on it.
Preparation Tips
Decide first whether you want a contract job
One year, extendable to four and possibly eight, with no benefit or facility beyond the monthly amount and one annual allowance, and no claim to regular employment. Settle that before paying a fee that is forfeited if you turn out ineligible.
Prepare your own engineering subject, and almost only that
100 of the 120 questions are on your discipline, with no general awareness and no current affairs. Revise the core of your degree systematically, using the GATE syllabus in your branch as the map.
Practise on GATE papers, scored BDL's way
GATE papers in your branch are the closest public equivalent. Work them at one minute a question and score +1 and −0.25, since GATE's own mix of 1 and 2 mark questions and unpenalised numerical items will mislead you. Compare BDL's archived cut-offs for your discipline across cycles to set a target.
Do not neglect the twenty aptitude marks
Where most disciplines closed within a mark or two of the qualifying figure, twenty marks of ordinary aptitude decide a lot of places, and they are easier to secure than twenty of engineering.
Know the two numbers before you sit
60 is 50 per cent and 48 is 40 per cent. In 2025 seven of the thirteen disciplines closed within a fraction of one of those, so clearing the qualifying mark was most of the contest. Aim at it deliberately.
Unless you are applying to Electrical
Those two posts closed at 77 and 82.75, a two-thirds score on a degree-level paper. Plan for a far higher target than the qualifying mark suggests.
Respect the penalty, which was added late
Four wrong answers cancel one right one. The rule came by addendum sixteen days after the advertisement, so read the addenda before assuming any marking scheme.
Check the equivalent-branch list, in your favour
BDL accepts Aerospace and Aeronautical against Mechanical and Information Technology against Computer Science. Several other defence and atomic-energy recruiters exclude exactly those branches.
Get the percentage arithmetic right
- 55 per cent aggregate across all semesters, or 50 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates only against a reserved post.
- No rounding. 49.99 per cent is not 50 per cent.
- If your degree is in CGPA, get the university's conversion certificate, or BDL applies the harsher default.
And the administrative points
Only the Central Government list counts for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and EWS, in the prescribed proforma, with an OBC (NCL) certificate dated on or after 1 April. One post, one application, no edits. Budget for the travel, and watch the website rather than your inbox.
Sample Papers
BDL releases no previous papers, sample papers or answer keys for this recruitment. What it does publish, on its recruitments page, is the cut-off table from each past shortlist, which is the more useful document. Practice advice is under Preparation Tips.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is BDL Trainee Engineer a regular job?
No. It is a contract engagement. The advertisement states that a contract employee "shall not make any claim for regular employment in BDL, since the appointment is purely contractual and for specified period". BDL's regular executive entry is the Management Trainee, advertised separately.
How long does the contract last?
One year initially, extendable yearly to a maximum of four. A further term of up to four more may follow at BDL's discretion, on pay decided then.
What does it pay?
A consolidated ₹29,500 a month in the first year, rising to ₹32,500, ₹35,500 and ₹38,500 on each extension, plus ₹10,000 a year towards medical insurance, attire and footwear. Beyond that, no other benefit or facility.
How many posts were advertised?
212 under Advertisement No. 2025-3: 100 Trainee Engineer, 12 Trainee Officer, 90 Trainee Diploma Assistant and 10 Trainee Assistant. Electronics alone took 50 of the Trainee Engineer posts.
What qualification is needed for Trainee Engineer?
A B.E. or B.Tech. in the concerned discipline with 55 per cent aggregate across all semesters, or 50 per cent for SC, ST and PwBD candidates but only against a post reserved for that category. BDL does not round: 49.99 per cent is not 50 per cent.
My branch is Aerospace. Can I apply?
Yes, against Mechanical. BDL's equivalence list accepts Aerospace and Aeronautical for Mechanical, and Information Technology for Computer Science. Several other defence and atomic-energy recruiters exclude those branches, so check BDL's own table.
What is the age limit?
28 for UR and EWS on the closing date, 31 for OBC (NCL), 33 for SC and ST, with a further 10 years for PwBD candidates and 5 for Ex-Servicemen and for J&K domicile between 1980 and 1989.
What is the exam pattern?
A Computer Based Online Test of 120 questions in two hours: 100 on the discipline and 20 on General Aptitude.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, 0.25 for a wrong answer. It was not in the original advertisement; BDL added it by Addendum No. 1 sixteen days later, while applications were open.
Is there an interview?
Yes, worth 15 per cent against the test's 85. Candidates are called seven per post, up to ten, in category-wise merit order.
What are the qualifying marks?
50 per cent, which is 60 of 120, for all candidates, and 40 per cent, which is 48, for OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD candidates where a vacancy is reserved for that category.
Does BDL publish cut-off marks?
Yes, in unusual detail: a discipline-wise and category-wise table on the first page of the interview shortlist. In 2025 the Unreserved figures ran from 60 for Trainee Engineer (Electronics) to 82.75 for Trainee Diploma Assistant (Electrical).
Why was the Electrical cut-off so much higher?
A deep field against few posts: ten each for the two Electrical titles. In most other disciplines the shortlist closed at or barely above the qualifying mark, meaning the field above 50 per cent ran out before the 1:7 ratio was reached.
Can a reserved cut-off be higher than the unreserved one?
Yes, and it was. Trainee Assistant (Finance) closed at 65 for SC against 60 for Unreserved. Where a category carries only one or two posts, its own merit list can close above the general one.
What is the application fee?
₹300 for UR, EWS and OBC (NCL), excluding convenience fee and taxes, through SBI e-Pay. SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen are exempt on uploading a valid certificate. Non-refundable, and forfeited if paid by an ineligible candidate.
Can I apply for more than one post?
No. One application against the advertisement, and it cannot be altered after submission. The sessions also pair the degree and diploma streams of a discipline.
Where is the examination held?
Two places only: Hyderabad and its surroundings, and Visakhapatnam. The interview is at the Kanchanbagh Unit, Hyderabad. No travelling allowance is paid for the test, the interview or joining duty.
How long did the 2025 cycle take?
Under four months: advertisement 15 July, applications closed 10 August, test 30 and 31 August, shortlist 29 September, interviews 8 to 16 October, selection list 10 November. Every change was announced on BDL's website alone.
