BHU Staff Nurse Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
136 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Banaras Hindu University has no post called Staff Nurse and no exam by that name. BHU's nursing recruitment is for Nursing Officer.
All BHU hiring goes through its Recruitment and Assessment Cell. On 12 September 2026 its Non-Teaching, Results and Archive pages (the archive goes back to 2019) had no advertisement, notice, shortlist or result for a Staff Nurse.
BHU's nursing posts
Advertisement No. 20/2023-2024 advertised the whole ladder:
| Post | Pay Level | Pay | Posts advertised |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chief Nursing Officer | 12 | ₹78,800 (₹78,800 – ₹2,09,200) | 1 |
| Nursing Superintendent | 11 | ₹67,700 (₹67,700 – ₹2,08,700) | 2 |
| Nursing Officer | 7 | ₹44,900 (₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400) | 212 |
A Deputy Nursing Superintendent post, code 30540, appears in the 2022-23 records.
Why people still search for Staff Nurse
It's the old name. A Ministry of Health and Family Welfare order of 8 March 2017, following a Nursing Division order of 9 September 2016, renamed Staff Nurse as Nursing Officer, and Nursing Sister as Senior Nursing Officer, with no change in duties or pay. The old title lives on in coaching material and job aggregators. BHU was already using Nursing Officer in Advertisement 06/2018-19 (post codes 4479 and 4503 for Nursing Officer (Female)), so there's no BHU rename date to point to.
The live recruitment is 212 Nursing Officer posts at Level 7, split by gender, with a one-hour NTA written test, a skill test, and an experience rule that rejects more candidates than anything else. The details for that post follow.

BHU Staff Nurse Details
Exam Pattern
There's no Staff Nurse paper. The Nursing Officer written test, set out in BHU's notice of 28 March 2024, looks like this:
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency |
| Mode | Computer Based Test |
| Duration | 1 hour |
| Questions | 50, multiple choice |
| Total marks | 200 |
| Part A, Technical Subject (Nursing) | 30 questions, 120 marks |
| Part B, General Aptitude and Awareness | 20 questions, 80 marks |
| Correct answer | +4 |
| Wrong answer | −2 |
| Cities | 40 across India |
| After the written test | A skill test for shortlisted candidates, then document verification |
That's 72 seconds a question, and a blind four-way guess loses you marks on average.
Eligibility Criteria
These are the Nursing Officer rules.
| Route | What is required |
|---|---|
| I. Degree | B.Sc. (Hons.) in Nursing or a regular B.Sc. Nursing course, or Post Basic B.Sc. (Nursing), from a recognised University or Institute; and registration as Nurse or Nurse and Midwife with a State Nursing Council; and one year of experience in a minimum fifty bedded registered hospital after the qualification. |
| II. Diploma | Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery from a recognised Board or Council; and registration as Nurse or Nurse and Midwife; and two years of experience in a minimum fifty bedded registered hospital after the qualification. |
| Age limit | 30 years |
| Identified disabilities | OL (one leg) and AAV (acid attack victims) |
| Gender | Only male candidates for Nursing Officer (Male), post code 40003; only female candidates for Nursing Officer (Female), post code 40002; transgender candidates may apply against either |
Experience decides most candidatures
There's no experience-free route, unlike SGPGI, AIIMS NORCET or PGIMER, which take a B.Sc. Nursing graduate on registration alone. In the last cycle BHU found twenty-one candidates not eligible after document verification, and twenty of them failed on experience. It rejected a Community Health Officer posting under the National Health Mission, work as a Clinical Instructor or Tutor, unpaid work, hospitals under fifty beds, and experience not complete by the last date of application.
Selection Process
Nursing Officer selection is a written test followed by a skill test. Group B posts have no interview.
- Online application on the Recruitment and Assessment Cell portal, then the downloaded hard copy with all enclosures to the Office of the Registrar. Both are compulsory.
- City intimation slip and admit card from the NTA portal (bhu.ntaonline.in in the 2023-24 cycle).
- Written test by the National Testing Agency.
- Skill test for those shortlisted.
- Document verification at Holkar House, BHU, Varanasi, shortlisted on the written and skill tests together.
- Final select list.
Eligibility isn't checked until verification. Every shortlist warns that being allowed to sit confers no right to the post. In 2023-24, twenty-one candidates passed the NTA paper and a six-day skill test, travelled to Varanasi, and were then rejected.
BHU also keeps the right to withdraw a post without reason, fill later vacancies from the same candidates (so the post count can change), relax qualification, experience and age for exceptional merit, fill a post by deputation instead, and check documents at any point in service.
How to Apply
You can't apply for a Staff Nurse post at BHU. For Nursing Officer, when it's next advertised:
- Fill in the form online at www.bhu.ac.in/rac before the online deadline.
- Send the downloaded hard copy with all enclosures to the Office of the Registrar (Recruitment and Assessment Cell), Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005, by the second deadline. In 2023-24 those were 22 and 27 January 2024. Incomplete applications are rejected.
| Who | Fee (Group B) |
|---|---|
| UR, EWS and OBC | ₹500 |
| SC, ST and PwD | Nil |
| Women candidates | Nil |
Have ready: photo and signature (JPEG, up to 50 KB each), degree or diploma with mark sheets, State Nursing Council registration, category or disability certificates, and an experience certificate stating bed strength, that the work was paid, that it was hospital nursing, and exact dates.
Apply separately for each post. Nothing can be edited after final submission. Technical problems: recruitment@bhu.ac.in or 0542-2368781.
Participating Institutes
BHU recruits for itself through its Recruitment and Assessment Cell and hires the NTA to run the paper.
| University | Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005 |
| Established | 1916, by the B.H.U. Act 1915, an Act of Parliament |
| Status | Central university, Institution of National Importance |
| Recruiting office | Recruitment and Assessment Cell, Holkar House, BHU |
| Where the nursing posts are | Sir Sunderlal Hospital; Centenary Super Specialty Complex; Trauma Centre, Institute of Medical Sciences; Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, Barkachha, Mirzapur |
BHU isn't part of NORCET or the AIIMS Common Recruitment Examination. A BHU nursing post comes only from a BHU advertisement. Junior Resident, project and scheme posts from the Institute of Medical Sciences appear in general notices with fixed pay; they aren't Nursing Officer recruitment.

No Staff Nurse dates exist. The Nursing Officer cycle under Advertisement No. 20/2023-2024 ran like this:

The cycle before: Advertisement 06/2018-19, online test on 22 September 2019 (TCS iON), provisional merit list in 2020 with verification that November. Two cycles in eight years: watch the Non-Teaching Position page .
Cut Off
There's no Staff Nurse cut-off. For Nursing Officer:
2023-24 (Advt 20/2023-2024): BHU published roll-number shortlists with no marks, and no final list as at 12 September 2026. Document verification called exactly one candidate per post in seven of the twelve category blocks, and fewer than one per post in the other five.
2018-19 (Advt 06/2018-19): the provisional merit list for post code 4479, from the test of 22 September 2019, gave scores and category ranks:
| Category | Score range in the list | Rank range within category |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 228 down to 211 | 154 to 516 |
| OBC | 211 down to 208 | 285 to 352 |
| EWS | 208 down to 202 | 50 to 72 |
| SC | 208 down to 201 | 69 to 107 |
| ST | 201 down to 193 | 29 to 43 |
| PwD | 106 down to 91 | 20 to 30 |
Seventeen marks covered 362 unreserved ranks, about twenty candidates per mark. BHU has never published a qualifying percentage, a last-selected mark for 2023-24, or skill test marks.
Preparation Tips
- Search for Nursing Officer, post codes 40002 and 40003, on the Non-Teaching Position page. A Staff Nurse search brings up aggregators, which is where the errors come from.
- Check your experience first. One year in a fifty-bed hospital on the degree route, two on the diploma route, after qualifying and complete by the closing date.
- Get the experience certificate right. Bed strength, paid, hospital nursing, exact dates. CHO, Clinical Instructor and Tutor posts have been rejected. Read BHU's not-eligible list with its reasons before you ask for one.
- Check your age. The limit is 30, on a post that also wants one or two years' experience.
- Know your post. Female has 169 of the 212 posts and Male 43. They're separate competitions.
- Practise against the clock. Fifty questions in an hour, thirty on nursing. It rewards recall.
- Don't guess blind. At +4/−2, leave it unless you can rule out two options.
- Use the Indian Nursing Council curriculum. BHU publishes no syllabus.
- Send the hard copy. The online form alone is incomplete.
