Syllabus
The General Studies part covers elementary maths, mental ability, general awareness, general science, social science, the Indian national movement, geography and environment. The language part tests working knowledge of English and the chosen Indian language.
The advertisement ties the syllabus to SCERT and NCERT books, pitched at the level of the minimum qualification for the post. The detailed syllabus goes up on the BPSC site under Syllabus.
Eligibility Criteria
You need three things: the training qualification, a pass in a teacher eligibility test, and the age.
Qualification
- 12th with at least 50% and a two-year diploma in elementary education (D.El.Ed, by whatever name)
- 12th with at least 45% and a two-year D.El.Ed earned under the NCTE 2002 regulations
- 12th with at least 50% and a four-year B.El.Ed

For Bangla posts, 50% in Bangla at intermediate or a degree in Bangla. The 18-month NIOS D.El.Ed is accepted, as the Supreme Court ordered, for teachers already working before 10 August 2017.
Eligibility test
CTET Paper I or BTET Paper I. For the CTET, Bihar treats 60% as a pass for unreserved candidates, 55% for BC, EBC and unreserved women, and 50% for SC, ST and disabled candidates. Candidates from other states are held to 60%.
Age
At least 18 on 1 August 2026. The upper limit is counted on 1 August 2024:

| Unreserved men | 37 |
| BC and EBC, men and women | 40 |
| Unreserved women | 40 |
| SC and ST, men and women | 42 |
| Transgender | 42 |
Teachers already working in panchayat or municipal schools have no upper limit. SC, ST, EBC, BC and disabled candidates get 5% off the minimum marks in the qualifying degree or diploma.
40% of posts go to candidates who passed Class 10 or 12 from an institution inside Bihar. If not enough such candidates qualify, those seats open to everyone.
Selection Process
Selection is on the written exam alone. There is no interview.
For Classes 1 to 5 the merit list is built on Part II (General Studies) marks. Ties go to the higher Part I score, then the older candidate, then Devanagari alphabetical order of the name.
If you qualify for several class groups, you file one application and rank them. You are placed in the highest preference where your marks are enough, and dropped from the others. BPSC publishes the result; the Education Department checks documents and allots districts.

- Clear the language part first: 30% in it is required, but it does not add to your merit.
- All your merit comes from the 120 General Studies questions, so weight practice towards them.
- Blank answers lose marks too. Mark E when you want to skip a question.
- BPSC posts old question booklets on its Question Booklets page.
