Syllabus
The written paper is objective, at Intermediate (10+2) standard of the Bihar School Examination Board. The topic list was published on csbc.bihar.gov.in under Syllabus, tab "Syllabus for Adv. 02/2020"; a new one will come with the next advertisement.
The paper only has to clear 30 per cent and the five-times shortlist. What ranks you is physical: full marks take a mile under 5 minutes, a 16 lb shot over 20 feet and a 5 foot jump for men, or 1 km under 4 minutes, a 12 lb shot over 16 feet and a 4 foot jump for women.
Eligibility Criteria
Indian nationality.
Qualification, one of
- Intermediate (10+2)
- a Maulvi certificate from the Bihar State Government Madrasa Board
- a Shastri certificate with English, or an Acharya certificate without English, from the Bihar State Sanskrit Board
- any equivalent recognised by the State Government
Age, from the matriculation certificate
| Pool and category | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| General pool, General men and women | 18 | 25 |
| General pool, BC and EBC men | 18 | 27 |
| General pool, BC and EBC women | 18 | 28 |
| General pool, SC and ST | 18 | 30 |
| Home Guard pool, every category | 24 | 50 |
Physical standards (no marks, but you must meet them)
| Category | Height | Chest (men) |
|---|---|---|
| General and BC men | 165 cm | 81 / 86 cm |
| EBC men | 162 cm | 81 / 86 cm |
| SC and ST men | 160 cm | 79 / 84 cm |
| Women, all categories | 155 cm | Not measured |
Chest expansion of at least 5 cm is mandatory. The 162 cm for EBC men is higher than the Board's police constable figure of 160 cm.
Reservation
Vertical reservation follows the Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services Act, 1991 (Bihar Act 3 of 1992), as on the advertisement date. First, 3 per cent of posts go to Backward Class women as their own category. Then 35 per cent of the remaining 97 per cent are reserved for women within each category, horizontally.
Selection Process
- Written exam, 100 marks, qualifying at 30 per cent.
- Physical Efficiency Test, 100 marks. This alone sets the merit list.
Both pools go through one combined process. Scoring tables are under exam pattern.
Ties go to the older candidate, then the higher qualification, then marks in the Intermediate or equivalent exam, then English alphabetical order of the name on the tenth board certificate.
If selected candidates don't join, the Board can issue supplementary recommendation lists for six months from the final result. In past cycles CSBC has also called below-the-line candidates for a waiting list.
Salary
| Pay band | PB-1, ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 |
| Grade pay | ₹2,000 |
| Pay Matrix Level | Level 3 |
Allowances follow Bihar Government rules; the advertisement gives nothing more. For a serving Home Guard, who is a volunteer, the 301 earmarked posts are a route into a regular salaried post.
The service rules: Bihar Home Guard Service Rules, 2005 (Home Department (Special Branch), 2 September 2005), amended in 2010 (notification 2913 of 15 March 2010, Bihar Gazette Patna 191), 2017 (notification 4412 of 23 May 2017), 2017 again (notification 11076 of 21 December 2017) and 2018 (notification 6764 of 23 July 2018).
How to Apply
Online only, through csbc.bihar.gov.in. The last window was 3 July to 3 August 2020; none is open now. The fee is ₹100 for every category, plus bank charges.
Decide which pool you're in first. Have ready your matriculation certificate (it fixes your age), your qualifying certificate, caste and permanent residence certificates if reserved, an EWS certificate if relevant, and, for the Home Guard pool, proof of five years served and ten remaining.
After applications close, CSBC publishes rejected applications with reasons and correction windows for photo, signature or gender errors. It also warns about phone calls demanding money for fake assurances.

CSBC is at 05 Harding Road, Patna 800001. The 2020 advertisement printed its old address (Sardar Patel Bhawan, 6th floor, Block A/626, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Patna 800023) and old website (www.csbc.bih.nic.in). On 12 May 2026 it announced a newly developed website, linked from csbc.bihar.gov.in. It also recruits for Bihar Police, Bihar Fire Services, the Home (Prisons), Prohibition, Forest and Transport Departments.
The same Bihar Home Guards page carries a separate Home Guards Constable Driver recruitment with its own driving test.
Exam Centres
The written exam was held at centres across Bihar, listed by roll number with the admit card. The PET is at grounds notified separately. Last cycle the PET set for 7 and 8 February 2022 was postponed (notice of 21 January 2022) and moved to 12 and 14 March 2022, all by notice on the Bihar Home Guards page. Bring the e-admit card and original certificates.
Important Dates
No recruitment is open as of now. The last cycle ran:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Requisition | 8 May 2020 |
| Applications | 3 July to 3 August 2020 |
| Personal profile scrutiny notices | 25 January and 1 February 2021 |
| Written result | 15 April 2021 |
| PET schedule | 20 December 2021 |
| PET postponed | 21 January 2022 |
| PET rescheduled to 12 and 14 March 2022 | 11 February 2022 |
| Final result | 13 May 2022 |
The companion Driver recruitment: driving test shortlist 10 March 2021, driving test schedule 15 November 2021, final result 10 January 2022, supplementary list 18 May 2022.
That's close to two years end to end. Watch the Bihar Home Guards page for the next advertisement; CSBC sets dates by notice, not on a fixed calendar.
Admit Card
No admit card is available as of now. In the last cycle CSBC issued separate e-admit cards for the written exam and the PET, online only, on its Bihar Home Guards page, sometimes with a specimen OMR sheet. If your admit card doesn't appear, check the list of rejected applications first.
Result
For the 2020 cycle, CSBC published the written result on 15 April 2021 and the final merit list on 13 May 2022, both still on its Bihar Home Guards page. A written score tells you little: everyone over 30 per cent starts the PET level with 100 marks to play for.
Cut Off
CSBC publishes no category-wise cut-off marks for this recruitment. Only the written result and final selection list are posted, on its Bihar Home Guards page.
The PET scale can be worked out in advance. For men, scraping every minimum gives 20 + 9 + 13 = 42; a 5:30 mile, 18.5 ft shot and 4 ft 4 in jump gives 30 + 17 + 17 = 64; the top band in all three gives 100.
Preparation Tips
- Train more than you study. Above 30 per cent, extra written marks count for nothing; in the race, twenty seconds is worth ten marks.
- The race is half the score and comes first. Get comfortably inside the time, then push for the next band.
- Get coached on shot put and high jump. About 4 marks per extra foot of shot, and 4 per extra four inches of jump.
- Practise on a specimen OMR sheet so a form-filling slip doesn't void your paper.
- Check your height against the 162 cm EBC figure if that's your category.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous year papers are available for this exam as of now. CSBC hasn't published any.
The Advertisement No. 02/2020 carries the full PET scoring tables, which matter more. The last written syllabus was on csbc.bihar.gov.in, and the next one will come with the next advertisement on the Bihar Home Guards page.
