DFCCIL Junior Executive Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
DFCCIL Junior Executive is the ITI-entry technical grade in the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, a Schedule A PSU under the Ministry of Railways. It was last advertised under Advertisement No. 01/DR/2023, for 181 vacancies across three disciplines.

| Medical standard | A-3 |
| Age as on 1 July 2023 | 18 to 30 years |
| Qualification | Matriculation with not less than 60 per cent, plus a two year course-completed Act Apprenticeship or ITI approved by SCVT or NCVT in a listed trade, with not less than 60 per cent in the ITI |
| Selection | Two computer based tests, then Document Verification and a medical |
| Vacancies | 181 |
| Discipline | Post code | PwBD suitability | Vacancies |

| Mechanical | 23 | HH, OL | 9 |
| Total | 181 | ||
The grade is not in the current notice. Advertisement No. 01/DR/2025 carries Junior Manager, Executive and Multi-Tasking Staff only, so a candidate waiting for it should watch DFCCIL's Open Market Recruitment pages for a fresh one. Everything here comes from the 2023 notice.
The first paper is 100 general questions and screens only. The second is 120 questions split 60 general and 60 technical, and that one alone forms the panel. The Executive papers in the same notice split 24 and 96. A quarter mark comes off per wrong answer, and there is no physical test and no aptitude test.

DFCCIL Junior Executive Details
Exam Pattern
Two computer based tests, and the second one decides
| Item | 1st Stage CBT | 2nd Stage CBT |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100, one mark each | 120, one mark each |
| Duration | 90 minutes, 120 for a PwBD candidate with a scribe | 120 minutes, 160 for a PwBD candidate with a scribe |
| Content | Entirely general | 60 general, 60 technical |
| Nature | Screening only | Forms the panel |
| Negative marking | One fourth of the marks allotted for each wrong answer | |
| Language | English and Hindi only. Where the two versions differ, the English version prevails | |
| Standard | In conformity with the educational standard prescribed for the post | |
That works out at 54 seconds a question in the first paper and 60 seconds in the second. The deduction is one fourth, not the one third RRB candidates are used to. And where a paper has more than one section there is no sectional cut-off, so the second paper is judged on the aggregate of its 120 questions.
The 1st Stage score, or normalised score, is used only to shortlist candidates for the 2nd Stage CBT. Marks in the 2nd Stage CBT are what form the panel.
The 2nd Stage paper splits evenly
| Part | Questions | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Part-I | 60 | General Knowledge, Numerical Ability, General Aptitude and Reasoning, General Science |
| Part-II | 60 | The technical syllabus of the discipline, at Annexure-IV |
An Executive candidate in the same notice sits 24 general questions and 96 technical ones. A Junior Executive sits 60 and 60.
Answer keys and objections
Provisional answer keys are displayed on the DFCCIL website after each CBT. Objections are online only and within the stated window, at ₹100 a question plus charges, and the fee comes back, less bank charges, if the objection is found correct. Objections by letter, application or email are not entertained, and there is no re-evaluation or re-checking of the marks of any stage.
A question found ambiguous, with multiple correct options, no correct option or an error is dropped from evaluation, and the marks are proportionally equated to the full paper before normalisation. The advertisement's own example: if one question in a hundred is wrong, the other 99 are marked and the score scaled back up to 100.
Syllabus
1st Stage CBT, the same 100 questions for every post
| Topic | Questions |
|---|---|
| Mathematics / Numerical Ability | 30 |
| Logical Reasoning / General Intelligence | 30 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Science | 15 |
| Knowledge about Railways / DFCCIL | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
The distribution is indicative, and the actual paper may vary a little from it.
Ten of those hundred marks are Knowledge about Railways and DFCCIL, a topic no general competitive-exam book covers. The corporation's own pages are the only source for it.
2nd Stage CBT, Part-I, 60 questions
General Knowledge, Numerical Ability, General Aptitude and Reasoning, General Science, identical for all three disciplines. That is a longer general part than the Executive posts get, since their papers give only 24 questions to general subjects.
2nd Stage CBT, Part-II, 60 questions by discipline
| Discipline | Syllabus as Annexure-IV states it |
|---|---|
| Junior Executive (Electrical), post code 21 | Electrical Circuits and Fields, Signals and Systems, Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Control Systems, Electrical and Electronic Measurements, Analog and Digital Electronics, and Power Electronics and Drives |
| Junior Executive (Signal and Telecommunication), post code 22 | Electronic Measurements and Instrumentation, Analog and Digital Circuits, Analog and Digital Communication Systems, Basic Network Connectivity and Communications, Power supplies, SMPS, UPS and Inverter, the basics of marking, hacksawing, chiselling, filing, drilling, taping and grinding, and the basic concepts of generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power |
| Junior Executive (Mechanical), post code 23 | Engineering Drawing, Measurement, Work, Power and Energy, Heat and Temperature, and Machines, Tools and Equipment |
Post code 22 carries bench fitting operations from the ITI workshop, sitting in the same list as communication systems and power supplies. They are there because the eligible trades for that discipline take in Fitter, Wireman and Electrician alongside the electronics trades, so a candidate who has only read electronics theory will not have met them.
The Mechanical list is five headings for 60 questions, and engineering drawing leads it. A short list means the paper goes deep rather than wide.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational qualification
One base for all three: Matriculation with not less than 60 per cent, plus a two year course-completed Act Apprenticeship or ITI approved by SCVT or NCVT, again with 60 per cent. Only the trade varies.
| Discipline | Trades accepted |
|---|---|
| Electrical | Electrician, Wireman, Electrician Power Distribution, Lift and Escalator Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, or Technician Power Electronic System |
| Signal and Telecommunication | Instrument Mechanic, Mechanic Consumer Electronics Appliances, Technician Power Electronics System, Electronics Mechanic, Fitter, Wireman, Electrician, Information Technology, Information Communication Technology System Maintenance, or Information Technology Electronic System Maintenance |
| Mechanical | Fitter, or a one year ITI in Welder or Plumber with a one year course-completed Act Apprenticeship |
So 60 per cent is needed twice, where DFCCIL's MTS post asks for it in the ITI alone. Mechanical is also the only discipline with a second route in.
Age, 18 to 30 years as on 1 July 2023
| Category | Relaxation in the upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years |
| PwBD, unreserved | 10 years |
| PwBD, OBC-NCL | 13 years |
| PwBD, SC and ST | 15 years |
| Ex-servicemen | Service in defence plus three years, given more than six months after attestation |
| Regular employees of DFCCIL | 8 years |
Upper age must not exceed 56 years including every relaxation. PwBD relaxation applies whether or not the post is reserved, provided it is identified as suitable for that disability. Date of birth must match the Matriculation certificate.
Medical standard and reservation
All three disciplines are A-3, and appointment depends on it.
| Discipline | UR | SC | ST | OBC-NCL | EWS | PwBD | ExSM | PwBD categories |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical | 12 | 3 | 1 | 6 | 2 | 1 | 3 | HH, OA, Dw, AAV |
| Signal and Telecommunication | 62 | 22 | 11 | 39 | 14 | 6 | 21 | OA, Dw, AAV |
| Mechanical | 6 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | HH, OL |
PwBD and ex-servicemen vacancies are horizontal, already inside the totals. A candidate whose category has no vacancy at a post is treated as Unreserved, as is one whose OBC-NCL certificate is over a year old at Document Verification.
Nothing is scrutinised before Document Verification, so candidature stays provisional until then and an unsubstantiated claim cancels it.
Selection Process
Three stages, and only the second paper counts
- 1st Stage CBT, 100 general questions in 90 minutes. Screening only.
- 2nd Stage CBT, 120 questions in 120 minutes, split 60 general and 60 technical. This forms the panel.
- Document Verification and Medical Test, at standard A-3.
There is no physical test and no aptitude test for Junior Executive. In the 2023 notice the Computer Based Aptitude Test applied only to Executive (Operations and Business Development).
How many go through at each stage
| Stage | Number called |
|---|---|
| 2nd Stage CBT | 20 times the community-wise vacancies notified, on 1st Stage merit |
| Document Verification, medical and formation of panel | Equal to the community-wise vacancies notified, on merit |
- DFCCIL reserves the right to increase or decrease the number called for the next stage.
- Every candidate of a community on the same cut-off marks is called, so a shortlist can run past the stated multiple.
- The final panel is capped at the advertised vacancies, community-wise, and no stand-by list or panel is maintained. On a shortfall DFCCIL may go down the merit list, but that is an administrative prerogative and no candidate can ask for it.
- A candidate shortlisted while availing reservation stays in that community or category for every later stage.
Applied to the 2023 vacancy counts, that twenty times works out at roughly 2,960 called for the 2nd Stage CBT in Signal and Telecommunication against 148 vacancies, 480 in Electrical against 24 and 180 in Mechanical against 9, compressed in one step to parity at Document Verification.
Document Verification
- Candidature is accepted only provisionally, because eligibility is not scrutinised at the application stage or at the CBT. Everything is checked here.
- A claim not substantiated by certificates cancels the candidature. Wrong or false information, or deliberate suppression at any stage, disqualifies the candidate, and services are liable to be terminated even after appointment.
- Where identity is in doubt, the documents cannot be produced or information does not match, the candidate is not allowed to appear for DV at all.
- No additional time is given to anyone who does not bring originals on the day.
Signatures must be identical at every stage. A signature in a different style at the CBT, at Document Verification or on any other document can get a candidate rejected.
Salary
N-5 on the IDA pay pattern
DFCCIL pays on the Industrial Dearness Allowance pattern, so a post carries a scale with a floor and a ceiling, not a cell in the 7th CPC matrix. Entry sits at ₹25,000; the N-5 scale ends at ₹68,000.
| Grade | Scale | Entry qualification |
|---|---|---|
| N-1, Multi-Tasking Staff | ₹16,000 to 45,000 | Matriculation plus a one year ITI or apprenticeship, 60 per cent in it |
| N-5, Junior Executive | ₹25,000 to 68,000 | Matriculation with 60 per cent plus a two year ITI or apprenticeship, 60 per cent in it |
| E0, Executive | ₹30,000 to 1,20,000 | A three year diploma with 60 per cent |
| E2, Junior Manager | ₹50,000 to 1,60,000 | A professional final qualification |
Junior Executive is the ITI grade above MTS. The step up costs a second year of ITI and 60 per cent at Matriculation, and pays ₹9,000 more at entry, ₹23,000 more at the top.
The package
- Pay is Basic Pay, IDA, House Rent Allowance and perks under the Cafeteria Approach, with medical cover, gratuity and leave encashment under company rules.
- Posting may be anywhere in India, and every post is transferable at the Management's discretion.
- A service bond is executed at joining, and probation runs two years, during which an employee may be discharged without reason.
- Pay protection goes to serving PSU and government staff under DPE guidelines, but not to ex-servicemen.
How to Apply
How it works
Apply online on the DFCCIL website only, in English. Nothing goes by post. Registration starts with the post applied for, name, mobile number and email ID, verified by OTP.
- Two registrations for the same post make the candidature liable to be cancelled without notice.
- Registration is complete only once the fee is paid, by the last date.
- A correction window opens after the closing date, but the post applied for, post code, email ID and mobile number are outside it. Once it shuts, nothing can be changed.
The fee
| Post and category | Fee |
|---|---|
| UR, OBC-NCL and EWS | ₹1,000 |
| SC, ST, PwBD, ex-servicemen and transgender candidates | Exempted, whether or not the post is reserved for them |
An exempted candidate must still name the category and upload the certificate. Payment is online only, by UPI, card or net banking, and the fee is never refunded, though a failed transaction returns to the paying account in 15 to 20 working days.
Documents to have ready at Document Verification
- Matriculation certificate and marksheet, doing double duty: the only document accepted for age, and it must show 60 per cent or better.
- The ITI or Act Apprenticeship certificate with marks: course completed, two years, eligible trade, SCVT or NCVT approved, 60 per cent or better.
- Original caste or category certificates, the OBC-NCL one under a year old, with a non-creamy-layer declaration before joining.
- Undertakings for ex-servicemen or PwBD claims.
Participating Institutes
What DFCCIL is
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited is a Schedule A PSU under the Ministry of Railways, building freight corridors along the golden quadrilateral and its diagonals; phase one is the Eastern and Western DFC. It recruits on its own account, not through the RRBs.
The registered office is in New Delhi and the corporate office is moving to Noida. Field units: Ambala, Meerut, Tundla (Agra), Prayagraj East and West, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar, Kolkata, Mumbai North and South, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Ajmer, Jaipur, Noida.
The posts in that advertisement
| Post | Level and scale | Medical | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Executive (Civil) | E0, ₹30,000 to 1,20,000 | A-3 | 50 |
| Executive (Electrical) | E0 | A-3 | 30 |
| Executive (Operations and Business Development) | E0 | A-2 | 235 |
| Executive (Finance), (Human Resource), (Information Technology) | E0 | C-1 | 14, 19 and 6 |
| Junior Executive (Electrical) | N-5, ₹25,000 to 68,000 | A-3 | 24 |
| Junior Executive (S&T) | N-5 | A-3 | 148 |
| Junior Executive (Mechanical) | N-5 | A-3 | 9 |
Signal and Telecommunication carries most of the Junior Executive vacancies, which follows from what a freight corridor is: a signalling system with track under it. Every count above is provisional.
Exam Centres
Both stages are computer based, and Document Verification and the medical happen at a DFCCIL venue. The date, time and venue of every stage are fixed by DFCCIL, and a request to postpone anything or change a venue, date or shift will not be entertained under any circumstances. Before each CBT come an e-admit card and schedule notice, facilitation centre details and a mock test link; the 2025 cycle swapped the centre notice for a city intimation giving reporting, gate closing and examination times by post and shift.
What counts as unfair practice
- Carrying into the CBT a calculator, a mobile phone switched on or off, Bluetooth device, headphone, earplug, laptop, iPad, digital diary, digital watch, book or notes, metallic wear, bangles, belt, bracelets, spy cameras, any other electronic device, or textual material.
- Taking rough sheets or other material out of the hall, or leaving the venue uninformed.
- Misbehaving with invigilators, security staff or DFCCIL representatives, obstructing the exam, or telling others not to sit it.
- False statements, suppressed information, fabricated documents, a forged admit card, damaged equipment, weapons.
Carry the printed e-admit card, a valid photo ID and a coloured passport size photograph.
Important Dates
The dates of Advertisement No. 01/DR/2023
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Online registration opens | 20 May 2023, 16:00 hrs |
| Closing date for registration and online fee | 19 June 2023, 23:45 hrs |
| Correction window | 26 June 2023, 16:00 hrs to 30 June 2023, 23:45 hrs |
| Tentative 1st Stage CBT | August 2023 |
| Tentative 2nd Stage CBT | December 2023 |
| Tentative Computer Based Aptitude Test | March 2024, for Executive (Operations and BD) only |
Age was reckoned as on 1 July 2023, 18 to 30 years. The exam dates above are the advertisement's own tentative ones, and they slip: in the 01/DR/2025 cycle every stage ran about three months late.
- Registration counts only once the fee is paid; without it the form is rejected.
- The post code, 21, 22 or 23, is final at registration; the correction window cannot touch it, though several trades qualify for more than one.
- Score card links close after a stated window. Save yours.
- Dates are announced on the DFCCIL website alone.
Junior Executive was not advertised in Advertisement No. 01/DR/2025, so watch DFCCIL's Open Market Recruitment pages, where live notices are posted and finished cycles move to Archived Notices.
Admit Card
The e-admit card is downloaded from DFCCIL's portal with the credentials created at registration, and the link stays live only for a stated window. Each stage is announced as a notice under Open Market Recruitment on the corporation's own website, with completed cycles moved to Archived Notices.
Carry the printed e-admit card, a valid photo ID and one coloured passport size photograph.
The email ID and mobile number given at registration cannot be changed in the correction window, and shortlisting for later stages is communicated through those two channels and the website. Signatures on all documents must be identical at every stage: a signature in a different style at the CBT or at Document Verification can lead to rejection.
Result
Marks, or normalised marks, in the 2nd Stage CBT form the panel. The 1st Stage CBT is screening and contributes nothing, and there is no aptitude or physical test at this grade, so 60 general and 60 technical questions decide the outcome between them.
Percentile-based normalisation is applied where a CBT runs in more than one shift for the same post. A tie on marks goes to the older candidate by date of birth, and if that is equal too, to alphabetical order of the name.
For the 2023 cycle DFCCIL published a notice on applications received, an objection management notice after each paper, and a score card for each stage on a login-protected portal. Those notices now sit under Archived Notices on the Open Market Recruitment pages. No category-wise cut-off table was published with them, and DFCCIL takes no responsibility for replying to candidates who are not selected.
Cut Off
DFCCIL publishes no category-wise cut-off marks for this recruitment. For the 2023 cycle it released a score card for each stage on a login-protected portal, so a candidate sees their own score and nothing about the threshold. Any figure circulating as a DFCCIL Junior Executive cut-off did not come from the corporation. Score cards and result notices appear on the Open Market Recruitment pages within a few months of each paper, and move to Archived Results afterwards.
The qualifying marks that are published
| Category | Minimum qualifying marks |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 per cent |
| SC and OBC-NCL | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
Note the grouping: SC sits with OBC-NCL at 30 per cent and ST alone at 25. Ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates qualify at the marks for their own community, and PwBD candidates get a further 2 per cent relaxation where there is a shortage of candidates.
Clearing that floor confers no right to be shortlisted, because the shortlist runs on merit position and on the numbers DFCCIL needs. Those numbers are 20 times the community-wise vacancies for the second paper and parity with vacancies for Document Verification, which are set out under the selection process.
Preparation Tips
Half the deciding paper is general
The 2nd Stage CBT is 60 general and 60 technical, and the general half repeats the subjects of the screening paper, so work done for the first is used twice. At Executive grade it is not: that paper is 80 per cent technical.
Sixty of the first 100 marks are maths and reasoning
Mathematics and Numerical Ability 30, Logical Reasoning and General Intelligence 30, against General Awareness 15, General Science 15 and Railways and DFCCIL 10. They are the most trainable part of the process.
Learn the ten marks nobody else learns
Ten marks in the screening paper come from Knowledge about Railways and DFCCIL, and no general guidebook carries it. Read the corporation's own site: a Schedule A PSU under the Ministry of Railways, the two corridors, the field units it lists.
Read your own Part-II list, all of it
Applying for post code 22? The technical syllabus drops seven workshop operations in among the communication systems, because Fitter is an eligible trade. Skipping them leaves marks on the table. For Mechanical, five headings cover 60 questions, so expect depth, and start with engineering drawing.
Practise with the right penalty
Four wrong answers cancel one right one, milder than the RRB figure most railway candidates carry in their heads. There is no sectional cut-off either, so a strong general half genuinely carries a weaker technical one.
Get the 60 per cent right, twice
This post wants 60 per cent at Matriculation and 60 per cent in the ITI, stricter than DFCCIL's MTS post. Check your Matriculation aggregate before you apply: nothing is verified until Document Verification, and a claim that fails there cancels the candidature at the end of the whole process.
Choose your discipline now
The post code cannot be changed, even in the correction window. Several trades qualify for more than one, and the vacancies are very uneven: Signal and Telecommunication 148, Electrical 24, Mechanical 9.
Small things that cost candidatures
- Two registrations for one post risk cancellation without notice.
- Your date of birth must match the Matriculation certificate.
- An OBC-NCL certificate at DV must not be older than a year.
- Sign the same way every time, and leave the phone outside: in the hall it is an unfair practice even switched off.
Sample Papers
No previous year question papers are available for DFCCIL Junior Executive; the corporation keeps no past-paper archive.
It does release a mock test link before each CBT and provisional answer keys after each one on its Open Market Recruitment pages, moved to Archived Notices once a cycle ends. Annexure-IV of Advertisement No. 01/DR/2023 gives the Part-I and Part-II content for post codes 21, 22 and 23; a practice set split 24 and 96 was written for the Executive posts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is DFCCIL Junior Executive?
The ITI-entry technical grade in the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, at N-5 on an IDA scale of ₹25,000 to 68,000. Last advertised under Advertisement No. 01/DR/2023, for 181 vacancies across Electrical, Signal and Telecommunication, and Mechanical.
Is there a Junior Executive vacancy right now?
Not in the current notice: Advertisement No. 01/DR/2025 carries Junior Manager, Executive and Multi-Tasking Staff only. Watch DFCCIL's Open Market Recruitment pages.
What qualification do I need?
Matriculation with not less than 60 per cent, plus a two year course-completed Act Apprenticeship or ITI approved by SCVT or NCVT in a listed trade, again with 60 per cent.
What is the age limit?
18 to 30 years as on 1 July 2023. SC and ST get 5 years, OBC-NCL 3, PwBD candidates 10, 13 or 15 by community, with a ceiling of 56 years including every relaxation.
What is the exam pattern?
1st Stage CBT: 100 questions in 90 minutes, all general. 2nd Stage CBT: 120 questions in 120 minutes, 60 general and 60 technical. Executive posts split theirs 24 and 96.
Does the 1st Stage CBT count towards my rank?
No, it screens only. The panel is formed on the 2nd Stage CBT alone.
Is there negative marking or a sectional cut-off?
Negative marking yes, one fourth of the marks allotted per wrong answer, so four wrong cancel one right. That is not the one third RRB exams use. Sectional cut-off no: you are judged on the aggregate of the 120 questions.
Is there a physical test or an aptitude test?
No. The stages are the two CBTs, Document Verification and the medical. The 2023 aptitude test was for Executive (Operations and BD) alone.
What are the qualifying marks?
UR and EWS 40 per cent, SC and OBC-NCL 30 per cent, ST 25 per cent, with 2 per cent relaxation for PwBD candidates on a shortage. Clearing them confers no right to be shortlisted.
How many go through at each stage?
20 times the community-wise vacancies to the 2nd Stage CBT, then parity at Document Verification. Everyone in a community on the same cut-off marks is called.
Is there a waiting list?
No. No stand-by list or panel is maintained, and the panel is capped at the advertised vacancies.
Can I change my discipline after applying?
No. The post applied for, post code, email ID and mobile number are outside the correction window.
Can persons with disabilities apply?
Within a narrow list: Electrical is identified for HH, OA, Dw and AAV, S&T for OA, Dw and AAV, Mechanical for HH and OL. Age relaxation applies whether or not the post is reserved for them.
What is the application fee?
₹1,000, and not refundable. SC, ST, PwBD, ex-servicemen and transgender candidates are exempt.
Can I object to an answer key?
Yes, online and within the window, at ₹100 a question, refunded if it is correct. There is no re-evaluation or re-checking.
Where will I be posted?
Anywhere in India, and all posts are transferable at the Management's discretion.
How does Junior Executive compare with MTS?
N-5 at ₹25,000 to 68,000 against N-1 at ₹16,000 to 45,000. The step up costs a second year of ITI and 60 per cent at Matriculation, and MTS has a Physical Efficiency Test that this grade does not. A service bond and two year probation apply either way.
