Ball point needles are used for knitted fabric.
A ball point needle has a slightly rounded tip that pushes between the loops of a knit instead of piercing the yarns. A sharp needle can cut the yarns of a knit, leading to holes and runs that spread along the wale.
Woven fabrics are normally sewn with sharp or regular point needles that pierce cleanly between the warp and weft. Matted and felt fabrics have no loops to slip between, so the rounded tip offers no advantage there.
