There are 8 mango trees in a straight line. The distance between each mango tree with other is 3 metres. What is the distance between the first and the eighth tree?
Answer: B
The distance is 21 m.
Eight trees in a line have only seven gaps between them, one fewer than the number of trees:
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{gaps} &= 8 - 1 = 7 \\ \text{distance} &= 7 \times 3 = 21\ \text{m} \end{aligned} \]
24 m is the mistake of multiplying the number of trees by 3. 27 m and 30 m would need nine or ten gaps, which eight trees in a straight line cannot have.
