Short term memory is capable of holding approximately how many items of unrelated information ?
Answer: C
Short term memory can hold approximately five to nine items of unrelated information, the 'magical number seven, plus or minus two' of George Miller. Chunking can raise the amount of information held. One item or two to four would be too small and ten to twelve too large for the typical span of unrelated items such as digits or letters, so five to nine is correct. Items held in short-term memory fade within about 20 to 30 seconds unless they are rehearsed, and the span of five to nine items refers to unrelated items such as random digits.
