Read each of the following two statements Assertion (A) and Reason (R) and indicate your answer using the codes given below :
Assertion (A) : Information reaching the meaning level of processing and elaboration has the best chance of being retained.
Reason (R) : According to information processing theories of memory, information is transferred from stage to stage until some of it is finally lodged in long-term memory.
Codes :
Answer: B
Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
The levels-of-processing view holds that information processed to the level of meaning and elaboration has the best chance of being retained. It is also true that information processing theories describe transfer from stage to stage until some is lodged in long-term memory.
The two statements come from different frameworks, and the stage account does not explain why deep processing helps. So R is not the explanation.
