Identify the bundle of nerve fibres that connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Answer: B
The corpus callosum is the thick bundle of nerve fibres that connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The pons relays signals between the cerebrum and the cerebellum in the brainstem, the medulla oblongata controls vital functions such as breathing and heart rate, and the cerebral cortex is the outer layer of grey matter rather than the connecting bundle. The corpus callosum helps the two hemispheres to share information, and when it is cut, as in split-brain surgery for severe epilepsy, the two hemispheres cannot exchange information directly, which was studied by Roger Sperry.
