Discussion
Consider the following pairs of arrangement and its principal cost.
Darlington pair - Two base-emitter drops and poorer saturation
Cascode - An extra device and its bias arrangement
Emitter degeneration - Reduced voltage gain
Current mirror - A large increase in supply current
How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
Answer: D
The first three are correctly paired and the fourth is not, so three match. A current mirror draws only the reference current it is asked to copy, so its cost is matching accuracy and headroom rather than consumption. Every one of these techniques buys something and spends something, and being able to name both halves is what turns a catalogue of circuits into a set of design choices.
