Discussion
Consider the following statements about composite joints:
1. Bolted composite joints cannot rely on local yielding to share load.
2. Bonded joints avoid cutting fibres.
3. Bonded joints are easier to inspect than bolted ones.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct: a composite cannot yield locally to redistribute load between fasteners as a metal does, so bolt load sharing must be designed rather than assumed, and a bonded joint transfers load without drilling through the fibres. Statement 3 is wrong - a bond line is far harder to inspect than a bolted joint, and that difficulty is the chief obstacle to using bonds in primary structure.
