Consider the following statements about the speed of sound in a perfect gas:
1. It is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature.
2. It is independent of the pressure at a fixed temperature.
3. It increases with altitude throughout the troposphere.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
The first two follow directly from the expression for the speed of sound and the equation of state. The third is the wrong way round: temperature falls with altitude in the troposphere, so the speed of sound falls with it, from about 340 m/s at sea level to about 295 m/s at the tropopause.
