Consider the following statements about the Mach cone in supersonic flow:
1. Its half-angle is the inverse sine of the reciprocal of the Mach number.
2. It becomes more slender as the Mach number increases.
3. It exists in subsonic flow with a half-angle greater than 90 degrees.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
The first two are correct and describe how the cone narrows at higher speeds. The third is meaningless: below Mach one the reciprocal of the Mach number exceeds one and the inverse sine is undefined, which is the mathematics reflecting the fact that disturbances reach everywhere in a subsonic flow.
