Consider the following statements about the Prandtl-Glauert correction:
1. It raises the predicted pressure and lift coefficients as Mach number increases.
2. It is a linearised correction valid only below the critical Mach number.
3. It applies equally well in supersonic flow.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
The first two are correct and set out both what the rule does and where it may be trusted. The third is false: the factor involves one minus the square of the Mach number, which turns negative above Mach one, so the subsonic form simply does not carry over. Supersonic linear theory uses a different rule.
