Modern CT scanners primarily use which detector type ?
Answer: C
Modern CT scanners use solid-state scintillation detectors.
Ceramic scintillators such as gadolinium oxysulphide, coupled to photodiodes, turn X-rays into light and then into an electrical signal. They have high detection efficiency, a fast response and little afterglow, which suits multislice helical scanning.
Pressurised xenon gas ionisation detectors were used in older third-generation scanners, but their low efficiency led to them being replaced. Photographic plates and CCD cameras are not used as CT detectors.
