Which of the following statements about causes of biodiversity loss is/are correct ?
1. Habitat loss and fragmentation are the most important cause driving animals and plants to extinction.
2. Human activities lead to over-exploitation of natural resources.
3. When a species becomes extinct, the plant and animal species associated with it do not become extinct.
Choose the correct answer using following options :
Answer: C
Statements 1 and 2 both are correct.
Habitat loss and fragmentation are the most important cause of extinction, and over-exploitation of natural resources by humans is another of the main causes (the 'evil quartet' also includes alien species invasion and co-extinction).
Statement 3 is false: when a species becomes extinct, the species tied to it obligatorily, such as its parasites or a plant and its specific pollinator, may also become extinct. This is co-extinction.
