Consider the following statements about wave reflection in supersonic flow:
1. An expansion reflects from a solid wall as an expansion.
2. An expansion reflects from a constant-pressure boundary as a compression.
3. A shock reflects from a solid wall as an expansion.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
The first two state the rule correctly: a solid wall reflects in kind, a free boundary reverses the sense. The third breaks it. A shock reflecting from a wall produces another shock, since the deflection has to be cancelled by a turn in the same sense.
