Discussion
Pressure differential and resulting hoop stress for a 2 metre radius fuselage.
| Skin thickness (mm) | Differential (kPa) | Hoop stress (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 | 55 | 68.8 |
| 1.8 | 55 | 61.1 |
| 2.0 | 55 | 55.0 |
| 1.8 | 65 | 72.2 |
Which change reduces hoop stress most effectively from the 1.6 mm, 55 kPa baseline?
Answer: D
Correct answer: Thickening the skin to 2.0 mm
Hoop stress is inversely proportional to thickness, so the thicker the skin the lower the stress. From the 68.8 MPa baseline, 1.8 mm gives 61.1 and 2.0 mm gives 55.0 - the largest reduction of the options.
Raising the differential moves the wrong way, taking the stress to 72.2 MPa. The trade is weight: every increment of thickness adds skin mass over the whole fuselage, which is why the working stress is set against fatigue life rather than minimised.
