The ocean known as the British Lake was the Indian Ocean.
Britain controlled the Indian Ocean littoral and its sea routes through bases such as Aden, Colombo, Singapore and Trincomalee, along with India itself, and held command of the sea there until the mid twentieth century.
The Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific were not controlled by Britain in the same way.
