The form grew out of sadir, danced by devadasis in the temples of Tamil Nadu, and the Tanjore Quartet codified its recital order under the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur in the nineteenth century. Rukmini Devi Arundale brought it to the stage in the 1930s.
