When was new rupee symbol was selected by Union Cabinet ?

It was selected on 15 July 2010.
The Union Cabinet approved the symbol designed by D. Udaya Kumar of IIT Guwahati, chosen from over 3,000 entries. It blends the Devanagari ra with the Roman R, and the two parallel lines suggest the tricolour and the equals sign.
