The pairs below are built from consecutive letters, but the pairs themselves are spaced apart. What comes next?
AB, DE, GH, JK, ?
Answer: A
Correct answer: MN
Each pair is two consecutive letters, and the pairs themselves start three places apart: A, D, G, J. The next pair begins at M and so is MN. Two things are moving at once - the internal structure of each pair and the step between pairs - and both have to be checked. LM starts one place too early, which is what following the letters continuously rather than in threes produces. The pairs consume two letters each and advance by three, so one letter is skipped between every pair - C, F, I and L in turn.
