What provided the immediate pretext for the second Anglo-Mysore war ?
Answer: A
The immediate pretext was the British capture of Mahe.
In 1779, during the Anglo-French war, the English seized Mahe, a French settlement on the Malabar coast that lay within the area Hyder Ali regarded as under his protection and through which he received supplies. Hyder took this as a hostile act and invaded the Carnatic in 1780, beginning the Second Anglo-Mysore War.
Hyder's alliance with the Marathas and the Nizam against the English was formed in response, and a British alliance with those powers did not trigger the war. The attack on Travancore was Tipu's in 1789, which led to the Third Anglo-Mysore War.
