Two lines of a doublet are at 4.30 and 4.24 ppm on a 500 MHz spectrometer. What is J?
Answer: D
The separation in ppm is 0.06, and multiplying by the operating frequency converts it to hertz:
\[ J = 0.06 \times 500 = 30 \]
so the coupling is 30 Hz, which is unusually large and would suggest a coupling to phosphorus or fluorine rather than to another proton. Ordinary proton to proton couplings run from about 2 to 18 Hz. The arithmetic matters more than the chemistry here: a separation quoted in ppm means nothing until the field is known.
