What will happen to the rate of evaporation, if the surface area of the liquid is increased? (Choose the most appropriate option from below)
Answer: A
If the surface area is increased, the rate of evaporation will increase.
Evaporation is a surface phenomenon: only molecules at the surface of a liquid can escape into the air. A larger surface exposes more molecules, so more escape per second. That is why wet clothes dry faster when spread out, and why tea cools faster in a saucer than in a cup.
Evaporation also increases with temperature and wind speed and decreases with humidity, but with everything else held constant a larger area always speeds it up, so 'decrease', 'remain the same' and 'cannot be determined' are wrong.
