Which of the following phytohormone accumulates during Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) in plants ?
Answer: A
The hormone that accumulates in SAR is salicylic acid.
After a local infection, salicylic acid rises in the infected and then in distant tissues. It is required for systemic acquired resistance: it induces pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins through NPR1, and plants unable to accumulate it, such as those expressing the bacterial salicylate hydroxylase NahG, fail to develop SAR.
Jasmonic acid and ethylene mediate induced systemic resistance and defence against herbivores and necrotrophs. Abscisic acid mainly controls responses to water stress.
