A nylon-6,6 chain of number average mass 22 600, with a repeat unit of 226, has a degree of polymerisation of
Answer: B
Correct answer: 100
Dividing as before,
\[ DP = \frac{22\,600}{226} = 100 \]so a hundred repeat units, each comprising one adipic acid and one hexamethylenediamine residue. Note that a nylon repeat unit is much heavier than an ethylene one, so a similar molecular mass corresponds to a far shorter chain.
