What would be the percentile rank for a score of 48 ?
Answer: D
The percentile rank is 84. With a mean of 40 and a standard deviation of 8, a score of 48 is one standard deviation above the mean: \[ z = \frac{48 - 40}{8} = 1 \] In a normal distribution about 84 percent of scores fall below z = 1. Since the data were normal, the percentile rank is 84. A rank of 68 is the area within one standard deviation either side, and 16 is the area below z = -1.
