In the following fusion energy reaction \(D + T = {}_{0}n^{1} + X\) identify X
Answer: D
In the D-T fusion reaction, deuterium and tritium fuse to give a neutron and helium-4: D + T = n + He-4, with release of about 17.6 MeV. Mass numbers balance, because deuterium (2) plus tritium (3) is 5, equal to the neutron (1) plus helium (4). Charges balance too, since 1 + 1 = 2 for the helium nucleus. He-3 would leave the mass number at 4, not 5, and lithium or H2 do not satisfy the conservation of mass number and charge.
