The zone representing the lowest seismic hazard in the current map is
Answer: A
Correct answer: Zone II
Zone II is the lowest zone in the current map, with a zone factor of 0.10. It is not Zone I, because Zone I no longer exists - it was merged into Zone II in the 2002 revision.
The merger followed the Killari earthquake of 1993, which killed some ten thousand people in an area then classified in the lowest zone. Zone II covers most of interior peninsular India. Note that a zone factor of 0.10 is not zero: buildings there still require earthquake-resistant design.
