Select the grammatically correct sentence:
1. He may be poor now but he appears to have been rich in his youth.
2. He may be poor now but he appears to be rich in his youth.
3. He may be poor now but he appears being rich in his youth.
4. He may be poor now but he appears to rich in his youth.
Answer: A
It is sentence 1.
The appearing is present but what he appears to have been is past, so the perfect infinitive to have been is required. To be would place the wealth in the present, which contradicts in his youth.
