Which of the following is not part of a starter motor?
The slip ring
The commutator
The armature
The field winding
Answer: A
Slip rings provide a continuous connection and belong to an alternator rotor, whereas a direct current motor needs the segmented commutator to reverse the coil current. The other three are all starter components. A symptom that appears under one condition and not another is what narrows the diagnosis quickly. Working the distinction through on a single concrete case fixes it more firmly than any rule of thumb. The shared properties explain why these belong to one family, and the differences explain why more than one exists.
