That fuselage carries \( 2000 \) kN m of bending. The extreme fibre stress is nearest to
Answer: C
Correct answer: 99 MPa
The extreme fibre is at the radius, so
\[ \sigma = \frac{Mr}{I} = \frac{2 \times 10^6 \times 2}{0.040} = 1.0 \times 10^8 \ \mathrm{Pa} \approx 99 \ \mathrm{MPa} \]Comfortable for aluminium alloy on its own - but this is only the bending contribution, and the pressurisation stress has still to be added, which is the point of the next item.
