Discussion
Consider the following statements about the transonic drag rise on a wing:
1. It begins at the drag-divergence Mach number, above the critical Mach number.
2. It is caused by wave drag and shock-induced separation together.
3. It can be delayed by thinning the section and sweeping the wing.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
All three are correct and between them summarise transonic wing design. The gap between the critical and drag-divergence Mach numbers is where the supersonic pocket exists but is not yet costly, and both thinning and sweep widen the usable range.
