A synchronous motor drawing 100 A at 0.8 power factor leading delivers reactive power to the supply of roughly
Answer: A
Correct answer: 60 per cent of its apparent power
With a power factor of 0.8, \( \cos\phi = 0.8 \) and so
\[ \sin\phi = \sqrt{1 - 0.64} = 0.6 \]The reactive power is \( S\sin\phi \), that is 60 per cent of the apparent power, and because the current leads, that reactive power is delivered to the supply. An over-excited synchronous motor is therefore a rotating capacitor as well as a mechanical drive.
