Input /Output Devices Questions and Answers

Answer: D

Correct answer: Scroll

The wheel between the two buttons rolls the view up and down a document or page. Clicking and selecting are done with the buttons on either side of it.

Answer: B

Correct answer: Non-impact printer

Non-impact printers - laser and inkjet - form characters without striking the paper, so they are quieter and produce far finer detail than impact printers, which press an inked ribbon against the page through a matrix of pins.

Answer: D

Correct answer: bar code

The pattern of parallel lines of varying width printed on packaged goods is a bar code; it encodes the product number for a scanner to read. OCR reads ordinary printed characters, and a scanner is the device that reads the code rather than the code itself.

Answer: D

Correct answer: character

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, the technique used to read the numbers printed along the bottom of a cheque in magnetic ink.

Answer: B

Correct answer: shape

Optical Character Recognition shines light on the page and reads the pattern of light and dark to work out the shape of each character, which it then matches against the shapes it knows. Size, colour and ink are irrelevant to that matching, which is why OCR can read many typefaces.

Answer: B

Correct answer: paper movements

However fast the print mechanism itself works, no line can be printed until the paper has been advanced into position, so the mechanical movement of the paper sets the ceiling on printing speed. The cartridge holds ink or toner and does not govern the rate at which the page advances.

Answer: C

Correct answer: input device

A bar code reader scans a printed code and sends the number it encodes into the computer, so it supplies data to the machine. That is what makes it an input device rather than a processing or storage one.

Answer: A

Correct answer: Input

A digital camera captures an image and passes it to the computer, so it supplies data to the machine. Storage is what the memory card inside it does; the camera's role in relation to the computer is input.

Answer: A

Correct answer: Trackball

A trackball reports movement of a ball rotated by the hand and so positions the cursor, placing it with the mouse, touchpad and light pen among pointing devices. The other three are all output devices.

Answer: D

Correct answer: Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner

All three send data into the computer. Every other group contains an output device - a monitor, a printer or a plotter - which disqualifies it.
