Find the correctly spelt word:
Answer: A
Correct answer: Broccoli
The correct spelling is broccoli - a double c and a single l. The commonest error reverses the two, giving brocolli. The word is Italian, the plural of broccolo, a cabbage sprout, itself a diminutive of brocco, a shoot. Italian doubles the c and never the l, and English kept the spelling exactly. Because it is a plural in origin, it takes a singular verb in English, as spaghetti and macaroni do. Other Italian food words that keep their original spelling and give the same trouble include zucchini, mozzarella, cappuccino with its two doublings, gnocchi and bruschetta. In each the doubled consonants are Italian conventions rather than English ones, which is why English speakers redistribute them.
