At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo in November 2013, Malta was confirmed as host of the next meeting, which it held in Valletta in November 2015. The meeting is held every two years, hosted in turn by member countries.

Mauritius had earlier been chosen to host the 2015 meeting but withdrew in 2013, which makes it the trap. Uganda hosted the meeting in 2007, and Cyprus in 1993.

The summit marked a decade of India's Act East Policy, and the Prime Minister announced a ten-point plan to deepen ties with ASEAN.
