Technology Questions and Answers

Answer: B

A LAN card is not necessary for a standalone computer.

Without a network there is nothing for it to connect to. An operating system, memory and some storage are all essential for the machine to run at all.

Answer: B

John Resig created jQuery, releasing it in 2006.

It smoothed over the differences between browsers and made DOM manipulation, event handling and AJAX far simpler. At its height it was used on a majority of the world's websites.

Answer: A

The SMPS converts AC to DC in a computer.

The switch mode power supply rectifies the mains, chops it at tens of kilohertz, transforms it with a small high-frequency transformer and rectifies again, giving the 12 V, 5 V and 3.3 V rails efficiently and without a heavy mains transformer.

Answer: D

Machine language was the first generation language.

It is binary code executed directly by the processor. Assembly language, the second generation, replaced the binary with mnemonics, and the third generation brought high-level languages such as FORTRAN and C.

Answer: A

OMR stands for optical mark reader.

It detects pencil marks in defined positions on a form by reflected light, and is what reads multiple-choice answer sheets at examinations, at enormous speed and without transcription errors.

Answer: C

James Gosling created Java, at Sun Microsystems in 1995.

Its compiled bytecode runs on a virtual machine rather than directly on the processor, which is the basis of its 'write once, run anywhere' promise.

Answer: D

EEPROM stands for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory.

Unlike the earlier EPROM, which needed ultraviolet light to erase, it is erased electrically in place, byte by byte. Flash memory is a form of it erased in blocks.

Answer: A

C is a third generation high-level language.

Dennis Ritchie created it at Bell Labs in 1972 to rewrite UNIX. It is high level in that it is portable and structured, but close enough to the machine to be used for operating systems.

Answer: B

An assembler translates a program written in assembly language.

It converts each mnemonic into the corresponding machine instruction, resolves labels into addresses and produces an object file. The translation is essentially one-to-one, which is what distinguishes it from a compiler.

Answer: C

Interpreter is a term from programming languages.

It executes source code directly, statement by statement, without producing a separate executable. That makes development quicker but execution slower. Python, Ruby and JavaScript are usually interpreted.
