The SMPS converts AC to DC in a computer.
The switch mode power supply rectifies the mains, chops it at tens of kilohertz, transforms it with a small high-frequency transformer and rectifies again, giving the 12 V, 5 V and 3.3 V rails efficiently and without a heavy mains transformer.
