APSET Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

1224 topics across 117 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

The Andhra Pradesh State Eligibility Test (APSET) decides who is eligible to be an Assistant Professor or Lecturer in the universities and degree colleges of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, runs it for the Government of Andhra Pradesh as the UGC-accredited nodal agency. It's a qualifying test, not a recruitment: posts are filled under each institution's own rules.

APSET-2025 was held as a computer based test on 28 and 29 March 2026 in 30 subjects, and results came out on 3 June 2026.

  • The certificate is valid for life, but only in Andhra Pradesh.
  • It doesn't lead to a Junior Research Fellowship.
  • Two papers, 300 marks, three hours with no break, no negative marking.

APSET Details

Exam Pattern
PaperQuestionsMarksTime
Paper I: teaching and research aptitude501001 hour
Paper II: your subject1002002 hours
  • Computer based only. There's no pen-and-paper option.
  • Both papers in one session, three hours, with no break between them.
  • All questions are multiple choice, 2 marks each, with no negative marking.
  • If the exam runs in more than one session, scores are normalised by a UGC-approved method.
  • You can change an answer any number of times before the test submits itself at the end of the time.

Paper I tests teaching and research aptitude: reasoning, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness. Paper II is in English for most subjects; History, Commerce, Economics, Education, Political Science, Public Administration and Sociology are in English and Telugu, and the language papers are in that language.

Syllabus

APSET publishes its own syllabus for Paper I (code 00) and for each subject on its Subjects page. Andhra University says the test is aligned with UGC-NET eligibility standards and the UGC exam pattern; it doesn't say the subject syllabi are the UGC-NET ones, so study from APSET's PDFs.

Eligibility Criteria
  • An Indian citizen.
  • A Master's degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognised university, with 55 per cent (General and EWS) or 50 per cent (SC, ST, BC, PwD and third gender). No rounding off.
  • Ph.D. holders who finished their Master's by 19 September 1991 get 5 per cent off (55 to 50).
  • No upper age limit.
  • Sit APSET only in your Master's subject.
  • PG diplomas and foreign degrees need equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities.

Final-year and result-awaited candidates

You can apply provisionally. You become eligible only after passing the Master's with the required marks within two years of the APSET result; otherwise you're disqualified.

Reservation

Reservation follows Government of Andhra Pradesh rules for SC (groups 1, 2 and 3), ST, BC (A to E) and EWS, with PwD and women's reservation applied vertically. Certificates must be issued by the Andhra Pradesh Government and valid on the date you apply. Third gender candidates get the same concessions as SC, ST and PwD candidates, and their cut-off in each subject is the lowest of the SC, ST, PwD, BC and EWS cut-offs.

APSET checks nothing when you apply. Ineligibility found at any stage cancels your candidature.

Selection Process

APSET only decides eligibility. Andhra University's result procedure:

StepWhat happens
I. Slots6 per cent of candidates who sat both papers qualify
II. CategoriesSlots are split by Andhra Pradesh's reservation percentages
III. MinimumAt least 40 per cent aggregate (General, EWS) or 35 per cent (SC, ST, BC, PwD) across both papers, and you must sit both
IV. SubjectsEach category's slots are shared across subjects in proportion to the candidates who reached the minimum
V. Cut-offThe aggregate of the last candidate inside the slots is the cut-off for that subject and category

Results show your registration number, subject, category and whether you qualified. Nothing comes by post, and there's no re-evaluation.

APSET carries no pay. It makes you eligible to apply for Assistant Professor and Lecturer posts in Andhra Pradesh, valid for life; pay is set by whoever appoints you.

Preparation Tips

Study APSET's own syllabus

Each subject has its own PDF on the APSET site. APSET doesn't say they match UGC-NET's.

Answer everything

No negative marking, so an unanswered question just costs you two marks.

Plan for three hours straight

There's no break between the papers.

Check your responses

After the exam you can see your recorded responses and the question paper. A key challenge costs ₹200 a question and must be made in the window; nothing is heard after the result.
