Name the drug molecule recommended for the treatment of H1N1 flu :
MH SET - 2018, SET Exam - 2018,
Answer: B
The recommended drug for H1N1 influenza is oseltamivir.
Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is a neuraminidase inhibitor. The viral neuraminidase cuts sialic acid so that new virus particles can leave the infected cell; blocking it traps the virions on the cell surface and limits spread. It was the main drug used in the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and is recommended in India's guidelines for treating and preventing swine flu.
Amantadine (spelt Amantidine) blocks the M2 ion channel, but the pandemic H1N1 strain is resistant to it, so it is not recommended. Paracetamol and aspirin only relieve fever and aches, and aspirin is avoided in children with influenza because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
