BSSC SSO Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

Sub Statistical Officer, also called Block Statistical Officer, works in the Directorate of Economics and Statistics under Bihar's Planning and Development Department, collecting and checking data on farming, rainfall, births and deaths, the industrial index, state income and the agricultural and economic censuses. BSSC advertised 682 posts in Advertisement 01/25 on 11 March 2025.
Applications ran from 1 to 21 April 2025. The exam has not been held. In May 2026 the commission ruled out a large group of applicants on qualification grounds (see below), and no exam date had followed by mid-October 2026.

Exam Pattern
150 objective questions, +4 and −1, 2 hours 15 minutes, on General Studies, General Science and Maths, and Mental Ability.
Qualifying marks in the written exam:

Eligibility Criteria
A bachelor's degree with Economics, Maths or Statistics as one subject. A pass course or a subsidiary subject is enough.
On 14 May 2026 BSSC said, on the department's advice, that B.E., B.Tech, BCA, BBA and B.Sc. (Agriculture) graduates do not meet this condition and listed those candidates as ineligible. They could object by email between 16 May and 4 June 2026, or ask for a fee refund.
Age on 1 August 2024, minimum 21; candidates within the limit on 1 August 2010 are also allowed.

Staff already working on contract as Junior Statistical Assistant, Block Statistical Supervisor or Investigator get an age relaxation equal to their contract service.
Selection Process
Merit is out of 100: up to 75 from the written exam (your percentage × 0.75) and up to 25 for contract service in this same post, 5 a year. If more than 40,000 apply there is a prelim first, shortlisting five per vacancy for the mains.

Pay Level 7.

Fee ₹540 for unreserved, BC and EBC men and candidates from outside Bihar; ₹135 for Bihar SC and ST, candidates with disability and Bihar women.
