BTSC Lab Technician Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
114 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
BTSC Lab Technician recruits Laboratory Technicians for the Health Department, Government of Bihar. The Bihar Technical Service Commission (19 Harding Road, Patna) runs it. The latest round, Advertisement No. 02/2025, took online applications from 4 March to 1 April 2025 for 2,969 posts.
BTSC advertises each post separately rather than holding one combined exam. Lab Technician came out alongside X-Ray Technician, ECG Technician, Operation Theatre Assistant, Dresser, Pharmacist, Staff Nurse and Tutor (Nursing), all for the Health Department.
Contract experience counts for a quarter of the marks
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Written competitive examination, a computer based test | 75 |
| Work experience: 5 marks for each year of contract service in the same post, capped at 25 | 25 |
| Total | 100 |
Five years on contract as a Lab Technician in a Bihar government hospital brings the full 25 before you sit the test, plus an equal age relaxation. The recruitment is designed to regularise the state's contract staff. Without that service you're competing on 75 marks.
Reservation is for Bihar domiciles only. If your permanent home is outside Bihar you can apply, but as unreserved and at the higher fee.

BTSC Lab Technician Details
Exam Pattern
| Mode | Computer based test |
| Questions | 100, all multiple choice and objective |
| Marks | 100 |
| Duration | 2 hours, no sectional timing |
| Language | Bilingual, Hindi and English |
| Level | The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technician syllabus |
| Marking | +1 for a correct answer, −0.25 for a wrong one |
| Shifts | More than one, with normalisation |
Your test percentage is multiplied by 0.75 for the merit list; the advertisement's own example is 50 per cent becoming 37.5 marks. Because of normalisation, a raw score from one shift can't be compared directly with another shift or with a published cut-off.
Syllabus
The D.M.L.T. syllabus isn't a topic list. It's the curriculum of the two-year Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technician run by Bihar's Department of Health, Medical Education and Indigenous Medicine, with its own marks scheme.
| Year | Theory subject | Full marks | Pass marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Anatomy and Physiology | 100 | 50 |
| Principles of Common Clinico Biochemical Method | 100 | 50 | |
| Hematology | 100 | 50 | |
| Second | Bacteriology and Virology | 100 | 50 |
| Serology and Mycology | 100 | 50 | |
| Clinical Pathology | 100 | 50 | |
| Histopathology and Animal Care | 100 | 50 |
Each year also has a 100-mark practical and a 40-mark viva, which a written test can't cover. Of the seven theory papers, four are second-year, and microbiology (bacteriology and virology, serology and mycology) takes two. Biochemistry is taught as method, so expect questions on how an estimation is done. Bihar pairs histopathology with animal care, which generic D.M.L.T. books may not. B.M.L.T. holders sit the same diploma-level paper.
Eligibility Criteria
Open to Indian citizens. Reservation is only for permanent residents of Bihar, going by the permanent address in your form.
Qualification
| Requirement | Condition |
|---|---|
| School | Intermediate or 10+2 passed with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English |
| Professional | A Diploma in Laboratory Technician course or a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology, from an institution recognised by the Union Government, the Government of Bihar or another state government, with the certificate in hand |
Age
Minimum 18 years as on 1 August 2024, by the date on your matriculation certificate.
| Category | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
| Unreserved | 37 years |
| Unreserved, women | 40 years |
| Backward Class and Extremely Backward Class, men and women | 40 years |
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, men and women | 42 years |
Relaxations (one only)
- Persons with disabilities: ten years (GAD resolution 962 of 22 January 2021).
- Bihar government servants with three years' regular continuous service: five years.
- Contract service as a Lab Technician: relaxed by the full length of that service to 1 August 2024, part-years included, in a Bihar state government hospital or institution, or a non-private hospital under the central government, a panchayati raj body or an urban local body.
- Ten-year carry-forward: the last Lab Technician advertisement counted age from 1 August 2014, so anyone within the upper limit at any point between 1 August 2014 and 1 August 2024 can still apply.
Reservation
SC, ST, EBC, BC, EWS and Women of Backward Classes (a separate category in Bihar), plus 35 per cent for women (subject to vacancies) and 2 per cent for grandchildren of freedom fighters on a central pension, by a District Magistrate's certificate in the prescribed format. An identity letter calling you a freedom fighter's successor isn't accepted. Transgender candidates get Backward Class benefits under a GAD letter of 12 September 2014.
Certificate rules
- Claim reservation in the form. It can't be added later, and category can't change after registration.
- BC and EBC need a Bihar non-creamy-layer certificate; a caste certificate alone isn't enough. Women's certificates must be in the father's name and address.
- An EWS certificate is valid for one year from issue.
- Disability: Appendix-1 format from a medical board, uploaded with the form; no expired temporary certificates; Form VI under the RPwD Rules, 2017 for multiple disabilities. BTSC re-examines disability through its own medical board.
Selection Process
No interview.
- Computer based test, scaled to 75 marks.
- Category minimum (below). Miss it and you're out.
- Experience marks, added only if you qualify.
- Category-wise merit list out of 100.
- Document verification.
| Category | Minimum |
|---|---|
| General | 40% |
| Backward Class | 36.5% |
| Extremely Backward Class | 34% |
| Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, women of any category, and persons with disabilities | 32% |
So an unreserved woman qualifies at 32 per cent where an unreserved man needs 40.
Experience marks
Five per year, up to 25, for contract service in the same post in a Bihar state government hospital or institution, or a non-private hospital under the central government, a panchayati raj body or an urban local body. Part-years: working days × 5 ÷ 365. Service counts to 4 March 2025.
The certificate must be in the Appendix-1 format attached to the advertisement, signed by the district Civil Surgeon, a medical college Principal, a medical college hospital's Superintendent, a super-speciality hospital's Director, or the head of another named institution. Any other format earns nothing, and if you don't claim it in the online form you get neither marks nor age relaxation.
Salary
| Post | Laboratory Technician, Health Department, Government of Bihar |
| Unrevised pay scale | ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 |
| Grade Pay | ₹2,800 |
| Revised structure | Pay Level 5 of the seventh revised pay structure |
X-Ray Technician and Operation Theatre Assistant are on the same level. Tutor (Nursing), advertised later the same year, is Level 8 with grade pay ₹4,800. Allowances follow state rules and aren't in the advertisement.
How to Apply
Online only, on btsc.bihar.gov.in. Pay by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI; the bank adds its charge.
| Candidate | Fee |
|---|---|
| General, Backward Class, Extremely Backward Class and Economically Weaker Section | ₹600 |
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, permanent residents of Bihar | ₹150 |
| Women of any category, reserved or unreserved, permanent residents of Bihar | ₹150 |
| Candidates from outside the state, of any category, male or female | ₹600 |
| Persons with disabilities of every category | ₹150 |
If you pay the reduced fee and later can't produce the certificate, you lose your candidature. Paying the general fee avoids that risk.
Gather these first
- original matriculation certificate (it fixes your date of birth);
- 10+2 marksheet and certificate;
- marksheets for every year of the diploma or B.M.L.T., and the certificate;
- caste, non-creamy-layer or EWS certificate;
- domicile certificate, needed for any reservation;
- Appendix-1 experience certificate, if claiming experience marks.
Each claim (reservation, disability, freedom-fighter descent, experience) has its own column in the form, and anything left out can't be claimed later.
Participating Institutes
All posts are for the Health Department, Government of Bihar, Patna, in its hospitals and institutions across the state.
| Category | Posts | Of which for women |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 902 | 316 |
| Economically Weaker Section | 225 | 79 |
| Scheduled Caste | 595 | 126 |
| Scheduled Tribe | 39 | 8 |
| Extremely Backward Class | 667 | 142 |
| Backward Class | 415 | 95 |
| Women of Backward Classes | 126 | Not applicable |
| Total | 2,969 | 766 |
The women's share depends on vacancies, so it isn't a flat 35 per cent of each row. 90 posts are for persons with disabilities: 22 blindness and low vision, 22 deafness and hard of hearing, 23 locomotor disability (including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack and muscular dystrophy), and 23 autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, mental illness or multiple disability. Another 45 are for grandchildren of freedom fighters. The total may rise or fall if more requisitions arrive.
Exam Centres
The test runs in several shifts. Centres are announced with the admit card on btsc.bihar.gov.in, not in the advertisement, and there's no promise of your home district. Where you're posted later is up to the Health Department.
Important Dates
BTSC doesn't publish a yearly calendar; it advertises when a department sends a requisition. For Advertisement No. 02/2025:
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Online registration opens | 4 March 2025 |
| Online registration closes | 1 April 2025 |
| Age reckoned on | 1 August 2024 |
| Work experience counted up to | 4 March 2025 |
| Computer based test, result and document verification | Notified separately on the Commission's website |
Note that age is fixed seven months before the advertisement, while experience runs to the advertisement date. Operation Theatre Assistant, ECG Technician and X-Ray Technician (Nos. 03 to 05/2025) used the same 4 March to 1 April window.
Admit Card
Download it under Admit Card / Call Letter on btsc.bihar.gov.in. The date is notified separately. It also shows your shift.
Afterwards, scores go up under Score Card, and answer-key or result objections go through the Objection Portal, filed under the right advertisement number within the window BTSC announces.
Result
Results appear advertisement by advertisement under Result on the BTSC site, with individual scores on the Score Card page.
The score shown is normalised, not a count of correct answers. Your merit position adds up to 25 experience marks to the 75 from the test, so two people with the same test score can be far apart. Qualified candidates are listed category-wise and called for document verification of every claim.
Cut Off
The only figures BTSC publishes in advance are the category minimums in Selection Process (40% General down to 32% for SC, ST, women and PwBD). These come from Bihar-wide resolutions of 16 July 2007 and 22 January 2021.
No closing marks for this post have been published. The actual cut-off out of 100 will be well above the minimum with 2,969 posts shared on combined marks, and it appears with the result on the BTSC Result page.
Preparation Tips
- Count your experience marks first. Five a year, up to 25. With four years banked you need a much lower test score than someone with none. Get the Appendix-1 certificate signed by the right officer before you apply.
- Revise the Bihar diploma curriculum, all seven theory subjects, with extra time on the four second-year papers.
- Attempt everything you can. The penalty is a quarter mark and there's no sectional clock.
- Set targets after the multiplier. Sixty per cent in the test is 45 marks, not 60.
- Check the ten-year age clause (clause 2(v)) before deciding you're too old, and pick whichever single relaxation helps most.
- Get the right certificates, especially the Bihar non-creamy-layer one in your father's name if you're a woman.
Sample Papers
BTSC publishes no previous papers or model paper for Lab Technician. A "BTSC Lab Technician previous year paper" on sale anywhere didn't come from the Commission.
